Destroy All Monsters DVD

Postby Toho Music » Fri Nov 11, 2011 5:59 pm

I received my DAM DVD from amazon yesterday and watched it last night. My copy might be defective though, as it would "freeze" for a second or two, then continue on. It first froze at the 34:08 mark, then again at the 42:44 mark. However, it also froze an additional 15 or so times near the end of the film too. I watched it on a regular Toshiba DVD player, not on a computer.

Can anyone else confirm if they might have had any issues with the new DAM DVD?

It's probably because it's a dual-layered DVD. As the name suggests, a dual layer DVD has an extra layer to store more information. This creates an effect on the movie your watching that causes it to seemingly "pause" for a brief moment.

His dvd froze MULTIPLE times. Not just once for the layer transfer

It's either a faulty disc or the player itself.

You need to try it in other players.

How old is your Toshiba? Some DVD players 2007 and before would not play dual layer discs.

I own a region-free Toshiba 5-disc carousel DVD player, and bought it about 8 1/2 years ago. I want to add though that my DVD player plays every other DVD I own just fine, including every Tokyo Shock DVD I have, so would this indicate that the problem is probably the DAM disc itself, and not my player?

I have already contacted Media Blasters but haven't heard back yet. I sure hope they have a solution for me, because if they don't, I will have to ask amazon to send me a replacement copy, but what if the replacement freezes up on me too?

You have an 8.5 year DVD player? You need to try ANOTHER DVD player and see how it plays.

This is 2011. You cant rate DVDs nowadays to DVDs from even last year..

I have confirmed that there is a freezing defect with at least some of the DAM DVDs (not the Blu-ray) because two other people also reported the freezing and they have also returned their copies to amazon. There are currently two reviews on amazon which mention the freezing, but since other reviewers have not, then perhaps it is not the entire batch of DVDs which may be affected (I'm not sure at this point), but in any case, it is not my DVD player...there is a real freezing issue with some of the discs.

However, my friend and I have tried unsuccessfully to contact Media Blasters in order to alert them to the defect...between the two of us, we tried emailing MB 3x since November, but they have not responded at all? Could they be away, or is the company in trouble perhaps, I keep hearing that their Megalon DVD and CD continues to be delayed? In any case, I wonder why they aren't responding?

The only contact email I have for Media Blasters is located on their Facebook page, but they haven't responded to us in roughly 8 weeks now, but would anyone else know how to reach them or alert them to this problem?

As wataru said, you should try it in some other DVD players, especially one that's newer.

Media Blasters as a company is not in trouble. The delays regarding the Megalon release are part of the issue Toho has taken with both that and DAM. It's got nothing to do with the company's stability.

I have already returned the DVD to amazon, so I cannot test it on a newer DVD player, However, I did ask amazon for a replacement disc, but the replacement also froze in exactly the same spots as the other DVD, plus, as I already mentioned, I have confirmed that two other people also experienced the freezing and have returned their DVDs as well.

Media Blasters has not responded to 3 emails my friend and I sent them in the last 8 weeks, so would anyone here know why their customer service seems to be poor or know a different way to get in touch with them?

Until MB can help shed some light on this issue, I'm certainly not going to spend the money for a new DVD player, as it still plays all of my other DVDs just fine.

You really don't own a more recent player you can try it on? An Xbox 360? PS3? Anything else?

Echoing what others have already said, the only way you'll know for sure if it's the disk itself is if it has the same issue in another player.

Pop it in your computer and see if it works any better. I've had that happen before.

I've had weird glitches with DVDs that depended entirely on the means I was playing it in. I couldn't get the commentary track for Godzilla vs. The Thing to work on one DVD player unless I accessed it through the audio options on the remote, but would work fine in any other player I used.

I recently had the same issue. I watched VS. THE THING with commentary again recently for the first time since 2007, and I noticed that even though I selected to play the film with the commentary on in the menu, it started with the Japanese audio only. I had to select it in the audio options to get it to work.

This was on a 2010 Samsung Blu-ray player, yet I never had this issue on either my PS2 or Xbox 360 in the past.

I really couldn't think of a better way to explain it.

I don't know why; my PC is older than both of my players, and (mind you, I don't have many, if any discs with this issue anymore) it plays perfectly.

It's probably the software you're using to play the DVDs that can have a factor.

Well, I never got a chance to try my DAM disc in another player, but, as I've said a number of times here, my friend experienced the same freezing issue in his DVD player and another guy on amazon reported that he had this freezing issue too in his player, so I am pretty confident that there is an issue with all or some of the discs.

Now, perhaps all three of us have similar DVD players, but again, there might also be a legitimate defect in the discs as well. Maybe one day, I'll upgrade to a Blu-ray player (which plays regular DVDs too), but I have been waiting patiently for Media Blasters to get back to me regarding this issue, but for some unknown reason, they haven't been returning emails at all, going on 2 months now.

You're now just repeating yourself. We're all just trying to help you out here, and you need to try the next disk you get on another player. Everybody else here can't stress that enough.

There is definitely not something wrong with "all of the disks". I know several people who own the DAM DVD and have had no issues whosoever.

Media Blasters are trying to fix the legal issues with the DAM disk, which could be why they're taking so long to get back to you. Either that, or they just have less than stellar customer service.
