I just noticed, that in the three weeks I've been back, this is the first time I saw GXG post.
But I, that am not shaped for sportive tricks
Nor made to court an amorous looking-glass;
I, that am rudely stamped, and want love's majesty
To strut before a wanton ambling nymph.

Eh, I haven't felt the need to say anything for a while now. It wasn't until I noticed all of the weird sudden dislike of GMK that I felt like saying something.

I'm glad I've had a moderate distaste for GMK for a while, then. I feel like a hipster.

It's probably just a cycle a lot of movies go through before the eventual equilibrium comes, like how a film is generally regarded in the fandom in terms of quality. Look at the Showa movies, from what I can see there's a lot more general agreement on those than the Heisei movies, and more agreement on the Heisei movies than the Millennium movies.

I've followed the fan forums like TK and MZ since before GMK was released and honestly haven't seen some upswing in negativity lately. What people are saying now (both pro and con) is pretty much the same as what was being said back in 2002... and to the same degree.

I do think GMK generates a stronger level of enthusiasm or dislike among fans outside Japan than most recent (post 1984) Godzilla films because it's intentionally very different from most recent Godzilla films. The movie definitely has its flaws, but the majority of complaints I've seen directed at GMK over the years stem from people not understanding what the film is about or what Toho was trying to do rather than the film failing at its goal.

My dislike for the film actually came from the fan reaction.

A lot of the times, I heard fans say "BOT EET HAZ AH MESS-AHGE!" And it happened to be a message I'm sure American fans can't quite understand. Culturally speaking, that is.

I understand how it is about Article 9. But, I'm not going to hold that message on a pedestal. PArt of it is because I cannot understand the message to its fullest. I come from American, the martial bully of the world. I can't fully understand what it is like to have a "self-defense force" instead of a full-fledged army. And I can't understand the socio-political issues cause by that.

I do enjoy the film occasionally. But its portrayal of Godzilla and some of the characters irk me sometimes. Its simple personal tastes issues with me. Nothing to do with the film being critically good or bad.

I don't pay much attention to the whole "message" thing. It deals a lot with aspects of Japanese culture and history that I know very, very little about. I just watch it as a monster movie.

Keith provided a very informative explanation to a user on Club Tokyo (and probably here somewhere too), and it was interesting to read. It really shed some new light on the whole story for me. That being said, I still don't enjoy the movie a lot. I won't argue that it is a solid entry, and there are several good points to it, but it just didn't really do anything for me. I still watch it every once in a while, and my opinion has gotten better than the first time I saw it, but it's kind of reached a plateau.

Most of the arguments I hear against this movie are the same; the suits sucked, Ghidorah sucked, blah, blah, blah. I've never liked how Godzilla's opponents in the last several years were slightly under-matched, or his overall design in the millennium movies, but those are hardly points against the movie for me.

I don't get what's so 'perfect' about Kaneko's original plan to include Varan and Anguirus. Because a dinosaur and a flying squirrel lizard thing totally make better divine guardians than a celestial moth and a golden dragon. The monster roster doesn;t really matter to me anyway, it in no way makes or breaks the film like so many seem to believe so.

Primeval makes a pretty compelling point, is not random that KG and Mothra have become emblematic characters, they're visually enticing and bring an aura of mysticism into the picture.

GMK question

Postby zilla103192 » Fri Jan 13, 2012 1:48 pm

I don't know why, but this has been buzzing in my brain lately.

The hospital scene from GMK, where Godzilla's tail kills the girl. Who was she? And what was she from.

I recall someone say that she had some role in something else godzilla related. I wanna say Godzilla island, but I think that's wrong.
Don't try to be something else. Don't try to be less. Great things are going to happen in your life. Great things. And with that will come great responsibility.

I know that she was a survivor from G's attack on Odo Island earlier in the movie, but outside the film, I have no idea.

I think she was a JXSDF technician. Don't remember for certain, though.

My question is, when are Godzilla and Mothra finally gonna... ya know? I mean she's been in what? Nine Godzilla movies... Yes, nine Godzilla movies. Two more after GMK. Pretty sure all those Mothra babies had to "come" from somewhere... Giggity!

I think she was in Final Wars. The scene with all the celebrity personalities at the table discussing the arrival of the Xillians.
