Who Owns 'The X From Outer Space'?

Postby Rody » Wed Jan 04, 2012 12:07 pm

I keep meaning to ask this, but keep forgetting.

A while back, I posted a question Media Blasters' Facebook page asking if they had ever considered obtaining the rights to The X From Outer Space. I got a response from somebody saying that the film is currently owned by Eclipse, a branch of Criterion!

Is this true??

I think it's owned by Janus Films and their stuff has been released via Criterion. I believe Criterion DID have plans to release The X From Outer Space awhile ago. Perhaps with the success that their Godzilla disc is having (highest preordered Criterion title ever) then they'll finally get around to release TXfOS.

The Below link seems to echo the sentiments about Janus:

http://wtf-film.com/site/2008/12/05/uch ... ju-girara/

However it is from 3 years ago, and may need updating. I have the Orion VHS from 1989, so its not really high on my priority list. However I cant see why anyone would pay almost $30.00 for this film, as bad as it is, even if it looked better than ever, and was loaded with extras, (speaking of course if this was released by Criterion). I've never purchased a DVD that I know of released by Janus, maybe they release films Crierion dosen't want to give A+ treatment to? In any case, this film if ever released on R1 DVD (or A Blu-Ray) it should not have a MSRP of more than $10.00 IMHO.

Agreed 100%. Though to be fair, it was done bad purposefully. Still cant get the haunting image of Take-Majin pulling an ICBM out of his ass, out of my mind. :freak:

Monster X Strikes Back was a fantastic movie. Get over it. I'd love to see The X From Outer Space released on DVD though

I hope that if GODZILLA does well, Critereon will finally release PRINCESS FROM THE MOON..

Ryan, come on man...MONSTER X STRIKES BACK sucks and you know it! I think I was sitting with you at the G-Fest screening a few years ago, and was just appalled. I knew what I was in for, and even that wasn't enough to prepare me for what I was about to see.

I don't think it would be unreasonable to argue it's one of the five best movies ever made, period.

I can confirm that Janus Films has the rights to THE X FROM OUTER SPACE and GOKE: BODYSNATCHER FROM HELL. Both films were shown on TCM with the Janus logo.

Shochiku told me that if/when the movies were released on DVD/Blu-ray they would be distributed by Image Entertainment. Image is the distributor for Criterion (which is run by the same family as Janus) so these films could potentially be released under the Criterion, Image or Criterion's Eclipse imprints. If you'd like X or GOKE on DVD, your best bet would be to email a request to Image:

This is good info. I can't find this besides in bootleg format, and the region 2's are too expensive for me. I haven't picked up X Strikes Back yet because I want to see the original first. Hopefully we'll be able to get these someday.

I wonder how long it'll be before somebody comes in and says "it'll never happen; fan petitions never work!!!"

The X from Outer Space is available on Hulu in the Criterion section. They also have Goke: Body Snatcher from Hell.

There's no story connection between the two films so watching MONSTER X STRIKES BACK first would be fine.

I can do that! Studio reps have told me that they generally ignore petitions... a list of names is just too easy to fake. What does get their attention is letters because they know a person who took the time to write and mail a request is genuinely interested. Emails work too, but not as well.

So if you want a movie studio or video company to do something, it's smarter to go with what they say works rather than organize a petition that will most likely carry little weight.

Thanks. I'd previously contacted Criterion about it with no reply. I'll try this option now.

Good tip, KPA. X from Outer Space is goofy fun, and a good and decently priced dvd would be worthwhile.

I saw it on TCM; it sucked. So, I promised myself that I wouldn't waste money buying the DVD.
