What is peoples' obsession with the idea of this film having a connection to the '54 film?

Let it stand on it's own.

*High fives Kane*

The original film isn't the be-all, end-all and it's not necessary to reference it in every Godzilla reboot.

Maybe a little cameo, but no, not as a major role in the film.

I think he means the character not the actor.

I realize that. I was being facetious and wondering would us hardcore fans really be OK with the idea of anybody else portraying arguably the most important human character in the series, especially for a one-off American remake that might not even be successful. Personally, I shudder at the idea.

i was sorta thinking about a reference or background type cameo or a similar one like they did in rise of the planet of the apes with the three astrounauts from the original movie being heard of but not actually seen. He doesn't have to be in the film and any way sense it's a reboot.

I like it. BUT...

What I'd really like to see is the guy do a lot of agonized soul-searching, tear his hair out, and finally decide to sell out his beliefs and use his weapon on Godzilla...only to have it utterly destroy everything in sight but FAIL to kill the monster. :g2k:

Look, I can get behind a sorta easter egg mention of Serizawa, or having some Japanese guy in an eye patch thrown into the film in a blink-and-you-will-miss-it sense, but, really, we don't need Serizawa or any draws from the original film.

Chances are, if such characters are included, all that would end up happening is they'd be bastardized versions.

Thank you! I'll always appreciate the original for what it is... The beginning of my favorite film franchise. However, I'm actually not a big fan of it in general, and would watch most of the others in its place. I also would like the American reboot to start from scratch.

I'd think having the flick reference the original 1954 flick would actually help the story. Instead of going through a retread of the original, refer to the Big-G's origins, his first rampage, and his apparent destruction thanks to Serizawa's Oxygen Destroyer. Have reference to Serizawa, his sacrifice, and even mention how the man was memorialized, and even that there were some attempts to recreate the Oxygen Destroyer, but failed. Even blew up in some people's faces. X_X

To be fair it's like 8 pages back and the search function likes to crap out so it's a pretty understandable mistake.

Teenagers can be useful, not in a Transformers way, but give the teenager a caught in the middle a new feel. Throw in a Japanese female cryptozoologist, and not like a general, but a veteran sergant who's all grim and stuff.

Definitely not interested in romantic love interest between two teens or anyone else for that matter. If there is a couple let that already be established and not be the main focus. I want ordinary people to play the main characters. I want them to give it a realistic human eliment feel similar to The Walking dead. Human characters in Godzilla films were never anything special but at least this time they can add real emotional tension between the human characters and the monster/s. I want a Godzilla movie that feels real despite any eliments that are far out there.

Human characters should consist of a bus driver who gets caught up in the events of Godzilla and decides to use his bus for refuge to the survivors in the city where Godzilla attacks, a pshycic who just discovers her abilities (homage to micki), a fisherman who goes public with his eyewitness account of a giant sea creature who recieves much ridicule and develops a alcohol problem as a result before Godzilla finally submerges, and a news reporter who struggles to get a good story prior to Godzilla's arrival. Simple with a strong effect. I would stay away from focusing on any military charactors and their agenda despite their presence in the film. Sort've like Cloverfield. And in the end all the charactors somehow end up encountering eachother to help eachother survive Godzilla's wrath.
