Comments like this just really depress me. I can certainly enjoy a film that is violent and/or filled with female nudity. Absurdity don't bother me either. I have no problem with a ridicilous film that has fun with itself. But this movie just felt like a bad Final Destination sequel with big CGI fish. There were moments that I found visually enjoyable but there wasn't a purpose to any of it so the whole viewing experience came off empty to me. There never felt like there was a rhyme or reason to any of it.
Maybe I'm just getting too old but all these comments I read championing the first Piranha 3-D just feel like we're moving closer and closer to the futuristic movie audiences portrayed in Mike Judge's "Idiocracy". The problem with a lot of these self-aware horror films that strive to be "campy" is their awareness of the joke and their desire to make the audience know it. A joke doesn't work when you know the punchline before it is properly set up. I don't need a screenplay with a laugh track. I'm sure I read like Roger Ebert sounding off on the latest "Friday the 13th" sequel in the 80's with this post but there's just something cynical about the idea that all we require of a film are blood and tits. Making a movie that is stupid for stupid's sake is a little sad to me. A movie can be absurdly over-the-top and still have likeable characters and a clever script. Guys like John Landis and Joe Dante acheived this. The original Piranha. American Werewolf In London. Return Of The Living Dead. Movies that understood the absurdity of their premise and pulled some laughs out of it but still allowed for the audience to pull for the characters while at the same time, having a consistent flow to the universe they've created.
The premise for this "Piranha 3DD" could actually be a hell of a lot of fun with the right people behind it but if it were to adopt the same tone as its predecessor then I think it would grow tired quickly. But, hey. What do I know? I'm sure it will make millions.
They do look bigger then Ds though but that's me.
