Marble Hornets

Postby Gorosaurus Rex » Sat Dec 31, 2011 7:48 am

(First, off I'm aware that this technically could go in the Creepy Pasta or Web Video Thread, or even may belong in the Media Center. However, seeing as it's a series of videos, and doesn't really seem to fit most of the criteria for the Media Center, I'll put it here.)

Marble Hornets was my original introduction to the idea of CreepyPasta. For those unfamiliar with the series, it essentially runs under the idea of being a season Blair Witch-esque ARG. The concept itself may turn off some viewers at first, but the series all together puts forward a very unnerving atmosphere and some entries are downright horrifying, especially in the first season. I've included the link to the first episode below.

For those that haven't seen these, I recommend giving all of them a watch, especially if you are a horror fan.

Meh. I gave a try a while ago. I'm usually a big horror fan, but I never got into this one.

Slenderman is pretty boss though.

Been following this since Entry #16. Love it. Really stoked for the Season 3/Series Finale.

Season 1 was stronger overall, even if it floundered a bit towards the end. But it ended strong.

Season 2 also started out really well, but it lacked the focus that Season 1 had and it wasn't as fun with Jay being safe and sound in a Hotel somewhere. But it was really great in how it twisted around established mythology (Alex's connection with the Operator completely shines old footage in a new light), the new characters have cool potential as well for Season 3. And when Alex broke Tim's leg with a hunk of cinder block I flipped out. I thought he killed him for like two weeks. Season 2's finale was also incredible.

I'm kinda' liking that they're hinting at the possibility of Jay teaming up with Tim and (presumably Brian or Seth) and going after Alex.

I LOVE Marble Hornets (BTW we have a Slender Man thread).

I watched the first 40 or so entries at work, at night, in a dark booth, in the dark, in the middle of nowhere, alone, with the light off...

I still need to buy the first season on DVD and my girlfriend has been watching it too.

I agree 100%.

What I liked about the first season of Marble Hornets is really that it provided more variety and it played with the different elements of the mythos moreso than Season 2. The episodes where Jay is simply just searching through Alex's house are absolutely horrifying and nothing really happens. There's just so much atmosphere. That is until we get that unforgettable first shot of ToTheArk. And nothing beats those earlier shots of Slenderman peering through people's windows or slipping into Alex's apartment.

What bothered me about Season 2 is that it primarily just devolves to "walk through location, cough, get up, walk some more, see Slenderman, pass out." That formula is repeated for numerous episodes to the point where I almost gave up watching. I want to see more of that fun variety that we saw earlier on.

I guess the problem they encountered was that they wanted Season 2, initially, to be the finale. But they found it was to large of a story to fit into the single season schedule. So Season 2 just became set-up for the actual finale, Season 3. That's why we get alot of new things like Amy, Jessica, the second masked man, Alex's changed dynamic with the Operator, the mysterious Hotel, the return to the town, extra "unseen tapes" from the shooting of the Marble Hornets film, etc.

It's all setup for Season 3. But I do agree that Season 2 became just a little to much of a cocktease with each entry. But the eventual twist towards the end was pretty worth it, IMO.

I love that Marble Hornets struck a balance between seeming genuinely threatening (in a Goosebumps kinda' way) without breaking the suspension of disbelief by making it to out there. My Dads Tapes is entertaining, but it spoils the "found footage" atmosphere by showing people dying and this wouldn't be on Youtube if that was the case.

I would imagine Season 3 will kick off when College summer break starts, so it's just a handful of months to go!

I find the acting to be a lot better in EverymanHYBRID, but the mythology is alot more convoluted and harder to follow since it's spread around everywhere so badly. There was another one that I completely forgot about and it was a decent enough filler between Seasons.

I'm going to be sad when Marble Hornets goes. Checking the official Marble Hornets twitter feed has become a key element of my internet routine.

I completely disagree on the acting. I find that one character with the really deep gravely voice to be so over acted and annoying. His whole, "I don't know who or what this is, but we're gonna skreeonk kill you because I'm a badass that doesn't take shit," routine really gets on my nerves and is one of the reasons why I dropped HYBRID after awhile. And yes, the mythology is confusing. There are like five different youtube accounts, several twitters, and a few blogs you have to view just to get what's going on.
