Let's ignore for a moment that it's one of the worst made films of the series...This was suppose to be the 50th anniversary tribute to Godzilla, celebrating one of the longest running film franchises in history. And yet, the film is more-or-less a huge middle finger to the entire series and its fans, with only having about twelve minutes of screen time for Godzilla in a two-hour film. For this film, the monsters don't matter whatsoever, and would rather focus on being a Matrix rip-off.
There is no bigger insult to the franchise than GFW.
Well, there's GINO. Of course GFW's case is more baffling, as one wouldn't expect a Toho Godzilla film to sail into such waters.

It had the potential to be more than just Godzilla fights Mothra and King Ghidorah XVII

Hey! Why you leaving poor Baragon out in the cold?
GMK was FAR from being the biggest letdown of the Millenium series. That honor goes to Final Wars. Most of the problems that I see here about GMK can be traced back to Toho shoving Mothra in Varan's place, and Ghidorah in Anguirous's place.
Final Wars, on the other hand... I believe the others who came before me say why it's such a huge letdown very clearly.

Ask all of us if we give a shit.

Primevalgodzilla V2 wrote:Why is the main criticism of GMK, the one that seems to make it fail to reach all its potentital, is that 'it used Mothra and King Ghidorah'? That's hardly relevant to the films quality IMO. And as much as one would like to see the lesser used monsters, does anyone honestly think that Varan and Anguirus would make better regal legendary guardians than a spirit moth and a golden dragon?

Even if Godzilla had fought a different guardian monster at the end of the film I doubt it would have done anything to change the stop/start/stop/start nature of the battle and the artificial tension of Yuki being in the wrong place at the wrong time over and over again.

TokyoVigilante wrote:The biggest disappointment for me is Godzilla X Mechagodzilla; we have a great universe set-up, the best incarnation of the "G-Force" concept (the JXSDF) to date, a fantastic spin on a classic franchise staple (Mechagodzilla), and some decent characters and a great conflict set-up but the film decides to deflate it for no reason.
Kiryu, a weapon that the JXSDF has realized it can't fully control, is forced to send it out against Godzilla and risk setting loose two Godzilla's on the city. How great of a final battle could that have been? Kiryu and Godzilla duke it out, but Kiryu could go berserk and turn feral at any moment. How would a feral Kiryu fight? Would it ignore Godzilla and turn on the city? Would it tear Godzilla to pieces?
Such greatness was set-up then just "fixed away". That's a big let down for me. On a similar note, instead of using Mothra's demands for the dismantlement of Kiryu in Tokyo SOS as an interesting metaphor for the military relationship between the United States and Japan, they don't do anything with it.
