Who hasn't seen all the Godzilla films?

For discussions covering more than one Toho film or show that span across more than one “era.”

Maybe someone covered this on another thread (didn't find one using Search, though)... but has anyone seen Monster Planet of Godzilla? Interested in your reactions, if so.

I thought about taking a big chunk out of one day in Tokyo to head out to Sanrio Puroland to take this in, but given the choice between spending what that would have cost, on admission to a nightmare world ruled by Hello Kitty, no less, or spending it on more collectibles, the collectibles won.

A little MPG footage is available here...

...and there's also a book with photos I was lucky enough to find.

It's interesting to watch just to see the differences between the two versions, but it's not that riveting.

Indeed. I think I've fallen asleep trying to watch it (again) on more than one occasion. The music, and sound editing, is also pretty bad.

There's a handful of godzilla films I haven't seen, but eventually I'll watch them all.
Also I aim to watch all of the showa Gamera films as well.

I agree, but there never has been a watchable version of the original Japanese edit. Even Toho's HDTV is all murky and blue.

I found Toho's transfer more than watchable, personally.

Are you talking about their DVD transfers, or the HD ones?

The DVD ones. They seem okay to me.

I own all the Godzilla films on some form of DVD, and all the Gamera films, except Super Monster, but skreeonk that. Problem with my Showa Gamera films, and Gappa, is they're on shitty Diamond DVD packs which have abysmal quality. So I plan on buying them on Shouts DVD package. Till then I will watch them off the MST3K tin, which I did buy. I'm missing these from m y collection:

Varan
Matango
Battle in Outer Space
Frankenstein vs. Baragon
Latitude Zero
The Last Dinosaur
Mothra
The H-Man
The Human Vapour
Half Human
Gorath
ROM3

Of those, the only ones I have not seen are Varan and Latitude Zero. Once I buy those and the Shout! Gamera releases, plus Gappa, my Daikaiju Eiga library will be complete.

I also on the entire first series of Ultraman on DVD. I thought that would be enough, seeing as it really is same shit different episode for the next 40 years....

As long as they look good enough to you, that's what counts. 8-)

For me, they all have this kind of "drab" look to them, which isn't the case with any of the Sony masters, which is why I prefer those. I've had to get use to the way they look though, since it's the only way I can watch any of the films that CM released in the proper aspect ratio (minus the 50's films of course) which were all transfers of the R2 video. I know that CM probably couldn't afford to do their own transfers, so it's not a huge deal.

How can somebody prefer Toho's transfer of Godzilla 2000 to Sony's is beyond me. They're literally night and day. The Japanese HD looks so dark and soft most details are gone. Seriously, I can't understand how the timing of such a recent film got so messed up.

I have yet to see SOS. I hear it's good but it's so hard for me to get into the millennium series. I'm more of a pre-70s Showa fan.
Sit back and relax.
