A dinosaur awakaned and mutated by USA's atomic bombs. THATS. IT.

Hopelessly trying to make something more *ahem* "realistic" takes out all the creativity and imagination of a work of fiction.
It's better to leave a lot of possible explanations up to the apparently moronic modern day audience.

Just say "we think some dinosaur or some other creature like it from Earth's past was either awoken or revived by an atomic bomb test".

Don't make it "realistic" cause that will just result in GINO. AGAIN. I'm not against some things being explained, like how does he shoot an atomic breath just so we know something cool and it makes him seem slightly more believable but still leave some things unanswered so there is some sense of mystery.

I always liked the study or destroy angle to some of the films. They want to know how an animal could gain power from radiation... but at the same time he's a giant atomic monster causing mayhem. So I don't think they should expain anything, the characters should just be as confused as we are. Just make him look good and do cool stuff and people won't care.

Do we REALLY need the dropping of the atom bomb as the origin again? There are SOOOO many possibilities to give Godzilla a nuclear origin and I would rather see something new than stock footage of the mushroom cloud in yet another monster movie.

A simple origin would be nice. I think someone like "He is a lost sea monster" might work since the whole nuclear age has been over for years now. Godzilla is like Dracula, he does not need a big origin since everyone pretty much knows who he is.

OK a dinosaur or something like it mutated by a leaking reactor/sunken nuclear sub accident.

There really is no need for extra back story or over flexing of his origins. Look at how GODZILLA (1998) and Dragonball: Evolution flexed the original, classic origins into mockeries of their classic series. All they need to do is give Godzilla his basic origins, and not to let the film try to be something it's not with his origins or any other explanations.

it should be implied or a theory that Godzilla is awakened by atomic/nuclear testing.
or possibly a biochemical incident. it needs to some sort of mutagen.
You have your fear which might become reality. And you have Godzilla, which *is* reality.

I'd leave the possible supernatural and scientific explanations for people to decide on, since really, he's a bit of both. And as for the irradiation thing, the atom bomb tests conducted thus far have probably been less potent than some of what's floating around for other purposes. In any case, nuclear energy is a part of Godzilla's identity - it's gotta be some form of that.

Don't know about the future, but our past defines the existence of monsters like dinosaurs. The fact is if there where dinosaurs in the ancient times then they must have left there belongings somewhere in the Earth.
