Obscure Music That you Enjoy

Postby King Caesar » Mon Nov 07, 2011 5:28 pm

What are some rather unknown band(s) or unheard of songs that you enjoy?

Just to name a couple of mine:
• Bambi Slaughter, Sound of Dentage, and Class of '86 by Fecal Matter
• Black Sheep [Album] by Ra
• Cinema by Benny Benassi (Skrillex Remix)

Well, this is an album by a guy I follow on Youtube named cody weber. The band is named Wren and its an indie electronica album.

Suggest you guys download it: http://www.mediafire.com/?ez94h77417fyhf9
It's free, and you can donate to him via: http://wrennostalgia.tumblr.com/
Pick your own price basically.

Here's a couple songs from it:

This is sort of hipsterish thread. Not that that's an insult.

I have been listening to a lot of Thundercat recently: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ci91-_JK ... st_related

I also like Flying Lotus and Daisuke Tanabe.

Not quite. See, I bunch filthy hipsters together with Music Elitists.
"oh, Anthrax is SOOOO last decade", like who cares? Enjoy the music, hipster.

This isn't a music elitist thread.

Obscure music is just obscure music, that's waiting to be enjoyed by people. :)

Is it a compliment, then? Because I've never, ever seen the term "hipster" used in a positive connotation.

My reasons for listening to underground music aren't because I'm trying to be edgy, unique or different. I listen to it because lesser known bands actually have the ability and FREEDOM to create interesting music that isn't tied to the restrictive conventions of radio-friendly verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus, three-to-four minute song bullshit. There's a reason why there aren't any more groundbreaking bands on the radio these days...the public doesn't want to hear them. They want instant gratification, with the safety and reliability of hearing the same shit over, and over, and over again. The rest of us want something more. If that makes us hipsters, then I'm wondering what the hell a hipster really is.

That being said, cutting yourself off from all mainstream music is just as foolish as cutting yourself off from all underground music - that's where the term "elitist" comes from. But really, it's impossible to deny that the most creativie and thoughtful musicians of today aren't the same ones selling millions of records and appearing on the Grammys (hell, a lot of these Grammy winners can barely be called musicians half the time).

For quite some time I was always confused by the term "hipster". I didn't start hearing about hipsters until 2 years ago, and for some reason everyone hated them.

Now, I think I understand the reason why hipsters where initially hated. Because supposedly hipsters were essentially snobs who think they are better than you because they only like obscure shit. And they would only stoop so low to enjoy something mainstream out of irony.

Sadly, the more mainstream anti-hipster mentality got, the less logical it became. People just make fun of hipsters because it's the cool thing to do.

I find the anti-hipster mentality more annoying than hipsters themselves. People just sort of go along with hating hipsters, and so anything that carries any traits of a hipster is disliked. I think people don't even know why they don't like hipsters.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. "Hipster" was the first thought when I came to this thread, but I wasn't trying to insult anyone by saying that. Granted, I dislike the concept of subcultures and stereotypes because I feel they undermine an individuals unique traits.

Don't get me wrong. I find hipsters annoying.

You just need to know what a hipster is.

Hipster =/= someone who enjoys obscure music
Hipster =/= Someone who enjoys obscure music to be "cool" and just all around musical elitists.

You didn't insult anyone, just get your terminology correct ;)

I'm pretty sure hipsters only listen to obscure music that's awful. And they only do so to be "ironic".

You wouldn't understand, you're just too mainstream.

Yeah!

If anything, labels (grunge, post-hardcore, metal, metalcore) are just tools for me to look into or identify a certain type of music, though I don't discriminate.

I just finished Nirvana - Chosen Rejects and Krist has the right idea - alternative is just a word created to seperate old shitty music from new good music. What music did you have in 1990/1991?

I've really been digging Dalek (umlaut over the a). If you like experimental hip hop, give them a listen.

I think the point of Wataru's statement was that someone shouldn't be afraid of listening to obscure music and being called a hipster, or anything else for that matter.

People use the term "hipster" very loosely. I prefer "Elitist douchebag."

I listen to obscure music.. Am I a hipster? Do people consider me a hipster? no.
If I was an elitist asshole who listened to certain music to be hip, then yeah. Labels matter, whether people want them to or not.

Just found a new band on iTunes: The Deserts of Träun. They have some screaming (cuz it ain't singing), some jazz (without screaming), some progressive rock sound (like Dream Theater), and they have hard rock. In a nutshell, these guys are everything. A good starting pair of songs (because the album I have is continuous like Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Dark Side of the Moon, etc.) would be Descending the Crystal Mountain and Desert of Traun. It's truly awesome, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in something new (or as new as 2003 gets)

I like a lot of Jrock artists. Not that Visual Kei shit, but pretty good Japanese Rock that a lot of people don't know about.

I also do enjoy Alternate and Indie bands like Minus the Bear.

New band I found by randomly searching for stuff...they are the shizz.

Edit: Don't like instrumentals? Try Synzygy. I actually prefer them over Lalle Larson.
