Gamera:GotU and Gamera:AoL on Blu-ray in the US on 10/12/10

Just got a reply to an E-mail I sent to Mill Creek complaining about the G3 subtitles justifying there approach to the film. Don't understand how they can defend such a poor subtitle track when sentences are missing and it's so out of sync i's hard to keep up with who's saying what. Oh well doesn't sound like they'll be making a change any time soon, I still don't understand, even with the reasoning they give how the subtitles on the first two films are fine and G 3 is all messed up, it's not like there's an overabundance of dialogue in G3, they're all quite talkie.

I made a post on their Facebook wall yesterday but they haven't responded yet as soon as I get a response back I'll share it here. I assume I'll get the same response you got.

I would think so. This whole situation is really starting to piss me off, the reply I got stated that the subtitles on the G3 disc are the simular to the ones found on the previous blu-ray, hmmm?! I don't recall whole sentences missing and vital plot details obscured because of crap subtitles. At one point a character replies to a question that hasn't been translated. Their reasoning for this is they can't translate every little detail (signs, captions, background dialogue) because it would fill the screen with lettering, I get that, I'm not asking for that I just want all the necessary dialogue so the film makes sense. I don't understand how my japanese DVD manages to fit in all the relevent dialogue without it filling the screen or getting out out of sync with what's happening but the Mill Creek Blu-ray can't? What is translated is virtually the same and Daiei managed to get it all in. And no matter what Mill Creek say the first Blu-ray didn't have this problem. They've made a mistake and I wish they'd admit to it instead of pretending there's nothing wrong.

No your complaints are resonable, they did a half assed job with the subtitling and they need to own up to it.

They will own up to it in a few months once they have gotten the bulk of the true sales out of the way. That is to say the people who will rush out and buy it almost instantly. It's terrible way to treat your customer but business has no loyalties to you or me they only care about your money. They don't seem to care if they do a good job or not. First class douche baggery. I noticed that there are 2 mistakes on the G1 subs though. Yet they're not on my ADV copies.

Your concerns are very justified. However, as it was said by another poster, they will probably address or at least admit (and not address) the problem later on. That may be several months; that may be in a year or two, etc. I was really looking forward to this release but I think I'll hold off and see what happens. I have a lot of other movies on my To Get roster so I'll focus on those for the time being.

So pretty much, it sounds like they're trying to resolve the issue.

Personally I think the best way to send a message would be for those of you who have the release send it back to where you got it from and ask for a refund. Most retailers send defective products back to the company so if enough people send the Gamera 3 disc back then that'll give Mill Creek the message that they need to fix the issue.

I made it clear on their Facebook that I won't be buying the release until the subs are fixed on the disc.

Dubb is fine compared to the subbs.

Well I watched the subs anyway and yeah, it was pretty terrible.

I understood the plot but I had problems keeping up with the conversations, way too my cuts. Does the dub change up any (of what's suppose to be there...) dialogue?

Yeah I checked the dub and though it's a little different, which is to be expected, all the vital info is there including stuff left out in the subs. Go figure.

Watched the dub at the weekend, it was one of the better dubs I have seen. Still miss the subs though. I take it nothing has been done by Mill Creek? Count me out for anything else they release till I read reviews.

Some businesses want to ignore a theoretically "minor" problem with their product (at least the initial run and maybe fix it later) rather than buy back a bunch of defective product and spend even more money fixing, then reselling the product. It depends widely on the company, the industry, and the defect at hand, but on something like this I'd say MK is going to try and make money off of whatever they have out now and maybe fix the issue later. I'm split on whether or not they may ever fix it but I'd put $5 on them not fixing it (or announcing a fix is coming) by the end of this year. New Year's wish, perhaps?

Anyhow, I personally am holding off on this for some months to see how this plays out. It's somewhat difficult for me seeing as how excited I was for this release, but I'd rather hold off and be completely smitten.

Okay finally got to these aaand they're not that great. I mean, the movies are still good and they look great. But the discs themselves feel so shoddy. The menus are awkward, the subtitles are all over the place and the special features are set up in such a weird way. The whole thing just feels rushed and it's no wonder you can get them for so cheap.

The set I won from Sci-Fi Japan came with a business card from Lyle Goff, project manager for Mill Creek and it'd be interesting to see what would happen if we sent him some messages: lgoff@millcreekent.com

It was cool to see how they built the Legion suit, though. You see a test suit they built crawling around a field or something and I thought it was amazing how mobile two guys in a suit managed to pull that off. I geek out over stuff like that. It doesn't have a humanoid shape at all and still looks and moves around better than some Heisei Godzilla monsters.
