Is it possible?

Postby gatorzilla » Fri Oct 28, 2011 10:40 pm

Is it possible for a action figure or statue or some kind of toy to be made of the Stan Winston American Godzilla?
I wonder if anyone would attempt to do it? Especially since someone is already trying to get a Graphic Novel of it made.

I'd buy it. I really liked the Stan Winston version. It was a good combination of old meets new. Much better looking than the supersized iguanna they went with. :g2k:

The model was on eBay once. It was really pricey, though.

People make unlicensed kits of monsters, superheroes, etc., all the time. They usually (though not always) call the kit something else. For example, someone wanted to produce a kit for an X-Acto knife holder in the form of GINO, and they called it "the Zilla-God."

I don't advocate doing this, but it does happen.

And if enough people (or even one guy with a lot of money burning a hole in his pocket) want something, they can often commission a sculptor to produce it, and someone to cast it. Risky business, though, in a lot of ways.

People make sculpts, statues, models and stuff all the time. I don't think I've ever seen a custom-made Godzilla toy though.

Yeah... neither have I. I did see something online about designer toys and where to send a sculpt if you want it made into a run of vinyl figures, but I haven't seen anyone making their own Godzilla toys that way yet. Looked damned expensive.

Gatorzilla mentioned statues, though, and an unlicensed resin kit, once assembled, and painted, is a similar product.

Oh, it is. I look over the post now and see that I'm incorrect, but the first time I looked I thought the original poster had only asked about toys.

Of course it's possible for some fan to scratch build their own figure of this design.

But an actual, licensed figure? Fat chance.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect to see a licensed figure of the Winston Godzilla, either.

I think you were right not to rule it out categorically, in that sometimes, unused designs can be produced in a licensed toy / figure line. As you probably know, Marmit made a figure of "Godzilla 1957," based on the Godzilla suit constructed for The Volcano Monsters, and Trendmasters produced an armored MechaGodzilla in their Godzilla Wars line that resembled MG on the Ohrai artwork poster.

But given the way Toho acts about licenses, I have to wonder whether this kind of thing happens only when whatever guy is supposed to stop it, is asleep or watching sumo wrestling (which frequently amount to the same thing.)

Then there's the question about whether even Toho could license something like that, given that Winston designed it for a project that Toho didn't allow TriStar to produce. As far as I know, the online graphic novel isn't authorized by Toho.

The '57 suit has historical significance since it was an actual Godzilla variant suit made by Tsuburaya's crew early in the life of their monster films. It's the suit that introduced the lack of ears and the fourth toe. It's significant. The Trendmasters Mechagodzilla toy was at least based on a design that made it onto officially released poster art.

The Winston Godzilla design was something created for a version of an American Godzilla film that was never made. There's really no significance to it other than "unused design". I don't see Toho ever approving merchandise with this Godzilla design.

It was created for the Americanization of GRA called "The Volcano Monsters", set for a 1957 release in the U. S., and shipped with an Anguirus suit to the U. S. to shoot new scenes - unfortunately, the U. S. backing fell through and the company folded and as far as I know, we don't even know if the suits ever reached the U. S.

The '57 suit has historical significance since it was an actual Godzilla variant suit made by Tsuburaya's crew early in the life of their monster films. It's the suit that introduced the lack of ears and the fourth toe. It's significant.

Whoa whoa hold up. Legion, you know your shit, I know that, but I have to ask - where'd you find this info out? Are their actual pictures available? I wasn't aware any details of the '57 suit were known.

There's a photo of this and the Angilas suit that is published quite often in Japanese books. I'm actually a little shocked you don't know about it,

Here's a model of the '57 suit
Image

It almost seems like a proto-type for the '62 suit.
