Could Oto Island/Gojira Mythology Be Used Again?

Postby Blackout286 » Thu Oct 27, 2011 6:43 am

If you remember way back to Gojira, Oto Islanders deeply believed in Godzilla. They did rituals in his name, tried to please him with female sacrafices, and greatly feared him. He became a legend, though some would think dark legend due to the nature of the original film. But I've always wondered if Toho would ever go back to Oto Island in their Godzilla films, hell it would be interesting if LP made some kind of use of the mythology from the original film.

Like, let's say that after Godzilla causes destruction in the LP for the first time and leaves. All hell breaks loose upon the city that he damaged. Order is thrown into mild anarchy, people think the world is ending, some amount of crazed people form cults or groups in which they perform rituals, do sacrafices, believing that it would please Godzilla and have him not attack the city again.

Could this be used again for Future Godzilla films?

I can actually see this working in the LP Godzilla film, It would give the current general auidence a modern update of the mythology from the original. They don't have to include Oto Island, unless the Godzilla within the film is connected to it in some way. But they can truly use the mythology to a good degree. Giving the film some interesting flare.

Now can I see it in Future Godzilla films? Yes, I can. But not much. The idea though good and interesting, seems to have a limit usage rate. It seems like an idea that can be used every once in a blue moon.

Well it certainly could be used but I don't feel it's necessary, nor do I particularly care for Oto Island and its natives to be brought back. At the most, they could have reports of a giant creature and some of the Oto natives claim to have seen something. LP is likely to do a reboot anyways, so like G98 don't expect it to be part of any previous movie's universe. As for Toho themselves when they eventually make a Godzilla movie again, I would like to see them take Godzilla into the 21st century. Calling back movies from the post-WW2 era and suitmation are all fine and dandy, but if they want Godzilla to survive they're going to have to adapt and get a somewhat larger audience impressed enough with Godzilla's movies. Some years down the road using the tragedy of earlier this year is a potential starting point. Godzilla was a metaphor for something and he can be again.

I think the mythology would great to be used in a sequel to the original film. Granted, there are so many of those that I doubt that LP is going to be doing that. I would guess that they would want to make an origin film.

They could use the Odo Island mythology even in a origin story, still. IF it should be used would depend on if it would make the story better.

In the LP or future Toho films, It could be used in passing. After wreckage of a ship is found and no normal cause can be determined, one investigator recalls that on his island home there were legends of giant sea dragons. They then make some joke, and that's it.

The scary/sad thing is people really would act like that if a monster came up and destroyed a city or two.

In John Wyndham's novel, Day of the Triffids, that's what happens. Diseaster hits, and then you have extremist groups and little dictators popping up.

This would be a cool thing for them to use, but not as a major part of the story. Just maybe like a small reference; like Godzilla was first sighted off the coast of Oto Island; we should start searching there." but don't go into it like they did in the original. Just a subtle nod.

Mild anarchy, a group of people losing their minds thinking the world is ending, worshiping Godzilla etc. I can see that but for a brief moment.

The Oto Island myth was briefly touched on again in GMK so I don't see why not in a reboot or standalone film.

For some reason, I think if they go back to Odo Island, Showa MechaGodzilla will be involved, disguised and sinking vessels until the King of the Monsters himself comes along. "THE BATTLE RETURNS TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN!!!" would so be the tagline.

It could be briefely mentioned like after godzilla attack for the first time people are speculating what it is then someone (a scientist or the main character probably) says he has read a book about japanese mythology where something was written about a giant sea dragon called godzilla. If it is a cientist they will dub the monster godzilla after the seadragon from japanese mythology

I like the whole supernatural edge Godzilla had amongst the islanders. I definetly would like to see that be used again.

Going back to the Oto Island mythology surrounding Godzilla is honestly one of the best suggestions for a new story. It has hardly even been mentioned throughout the series since the original film which gives filmmakers a lot of room to shift it around and add it some new stuff, all while keeping it as a nice homage to the original film. A lot could be done with it and I'd love to see a Godzilla movie take this path in the future.

I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be. It'd be a welcome homage to the original, and would probably only benefit he exposition.
