How did the Japanese react?

Postby Showa Gyaos » Wed Aug 25, 2010 5:27 pm

I know that TriStar's movie (GODZILLA, for those too daft to figure it out) has been panned by most traditional *American* Godzilla fanatics, but what was Japan's response? To dumb it down further, was it just as unpopular there as it is here? :eh:

Oh, America. How you try. :P

Or something like that. Basically "That's not Godzilla."

According to Steve Ryfles book, GINO got bad reviews in Japan and fans there felt betrayed.

The movie opened to record opening day sales and fell sharply afterwards. In the end it made about $33 million in Japanese theaters. "That's better than the 1990s Godzilla movies, but not significantly."

Well, consider that tickets probably cost more in '98 than they did through '91 - '95. Not to mention GODZILLA probably had a MUCH wider release than the Heisei Godzilla films due to it being a major American blockbuster. In terms of attendance, I would be surprised if GODZILLA was anywhere near the numbers for the highest grossing Heisei installments.

I thought the movie would do poorly in Japan since the movie been out for two months by the time it cameout in Japan, and people in Japan by now would hear how awful the movie was.

Probably the same way as one of the suit actors for the Heisei series felt. I remember reading he walked out of the premiere during the plane chase scene an said ''It's not Godzilla, It doesn't have the spirit''

Which is a nice way of saying ''What a load of Shit''

That was because of the hysteria, the hype, publicity everywhere... It would've been the same if the movie was bad... oh wait.

All I can say is that I almost went to see "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" to see if it was as ridicoulus and improvised as I was made to know...

Kenpachiro Satsuma, the actor that portrayed Godzilla in the second series of films (1984-1995) walked out of a Tokyo screening and told reporters that, "It's not Godzilla, it does not have the spirit".[10] Richard Pusateri, a writer for G-Fan Magazine and other Japanese monster periodicals, gave the film and title monster the name GINO, an acronym standing for "Godzilla In Name Only," which fans still use.

I heard Japanese fans were really unhappy with the film. They felt, as LG1979 said, betrayed. They thought they were gonna get a (fairly)faithful representation of Godzilla, with(most likely)better special effects. Did they get that? Not really.

Probably, they're more worried about Legendary Picture's Godzilla film than we are. They're afraid it's gonna happen again, probably.

I doubt it since it seems like we are in good hands so far. And that it's still too early to tell, and I have a feeling it will be much better then G98 since most reboots are always better then the first movie (I have not seen a reboot worst then the first).

In terms of tickets sold, GODZILLA actually ranks as follows for the 1990's films:

1. Godzilla vs. Mothra - 4.2 million
2. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah - 4 million
3. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II - 3.8 million
4. GODZILLA - 3.5 million
5. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla - 3.4 million
6. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah - 2.7 million
7. Godzilla 2000: Millennium - 2 million

So, not counting for inflation, it actually did on par with what the 1990 films were doing... dead smack in the middle in fact.
