Dark Souls

FROMSOFTWARE's spiritual successor to Demon's Souls. For anyone who's played Demon's Souls you're probably familiar with this. It's an action RPG known for it's harsh difficulty and unique online interaction. Dark Souls for the most part is the same formula, but will now take place in an open world which can be freely explored. Little else is known.

This is one of the few games which has really grabbed my attention.

I'll pass. It reminds me of other RPG copies.

...have you ever played Demon's Souls.... I can't really compare to any other game I can think of. Sure it may have a similar gameplay style as other games, but that's where any comparison stops. Then again, it's not for everyone.

Dude, your judging a game before its even out? Without playing the product or experiencing it for yourself? Pretty dull minded.

Would you say the same thing had he made that comment about a Golfing game or a fighting game. It's not "dull minded" (narrow minded?) to not have any interest in a particular game. I guarantee you're guilty of doing the same thing.

And I'm not too interested in this game series myself. The gameplay just doesn't look too exciting.

It looks like a really fun and challenging game, though I probably won't get it myself. If I am gonna spend my money on a game in the near future it will be the new Zelda game. Unemployment sucks like that.

Yeah some people say dull minded, it means narrow minded though just said in a slightly different format.

I think Tormentor was possibly assuming that Gyaos did not play Demon Souls at all since this game (Dark Souls) is the spiritual successor of it. Not only that, but the gameplay has been updated and has become much more than what people expect.

And how doesn't the gameplay look too exciting? I'm asking because I'm not sure what you mean since everyone is different when it comes to different things. So I'm curious about seeing your point of view.

I'm getting this game, I enjoyed the hell out of Demon Souls, Dark Souls will most likely rape my ego/self esteem and probably will try to break my down, exactly like Demon Souls but on a larger scale. I love it!

Oh and reviews are out:

OXM has awarded it a 9/10 and describes the game as "depressingly evil but utterly addictive". The review makes it perfectly clear Dark Souls is likely to be "too brutal for most newcomers" but also says it's "more exciting than anything, ever".

Xbox World says Dark Souls is a "stern but deeply rewarding experience" and thinks its "stupefying breadth will surely capture your imagination like few other worlds you've explored in games". It awarded the game a 9.6/10 score.

GamesTM has also given Dark Souls 9/10 and comments: "Dark Souls is a fine example of how great forethought and a less than tepid attitude towards taking risks pay dividends in the hands of real gamers. It is nothing short of extraordinary, though perhaps a couple of years on from Demon's Souls, it is also less surprising."

"Dark Souls is brutally uncompromising yet practically unparalleled in the sense reward it can offer to those who persist. Its inaccessible nature will put many off, but those who brave it will discover one of the deepest, most fulfilling gaming experiences available", Beefjack concludes, awarding the game 9.4/10.

Dark Souls earned a 5/5 from The Telegraph, which says "It is a game that brazenly proves game design fashions are just that; transient, fleeting trends that, in attempting to lay down a set of rules only throw down a new challenge for how things might be done".

Electronic Theatre went with a score of 89%
. It says Dark Souls will be recognised as a success for being "a videogame experience that grips the player and doesn't let go, despite the additional investment that may be required as players break their controls in a fury of anger."

NowGamer's 9.0 verdict calls Dark Souls a "compulsively difficult RPG that all genre-fans must seek out. It's a dark, hesitant world that you won't be able to resist".

"Dark Souls revels in its abstruseness: it goes out of its way to make those who wouldn't say they were RPG veterans feel like they missed a crucial class at school. To prosper in it, you almost need to operate like a detective, seeking out hidden areas and objects, and mining its endless menus (in gloriously old-school fashion, they can only be traversed using the D-pad) for tiny little edges that eventually add up", says The Guardian, it pegged Dark Souls with a 4/5.

IGN's review explains that "If you take the time get into Dark Souls' mindset, to begin to understand the twisted way in which it operates and taste the rewards behind its cruellest challenges, this is one of the most thrilling, most fascinating and most completely absorbing experiences in gaming." It awarded the game an overall score of 9.0.

"If entertainment is fun without failure and progress without pain, you'll have to find it somewhere else. But you'll be missing out on one of the best games of the year," concludes Eurogamer. It added another 9/10 score to the pile.

Finally is GameSpot's 9.5 review, which states: "Dark Souls doesn't just surpass other dungeon crawlers; it skewers them with a razor-sharp halberd and leaves behind their soulless corpses".

No problem. "Gameplay" probably wasn't the correct word for me to use. But, for me, it just looks like it has hack n' slash controls. Plus, the impression I got was that, when striking an enemy, the attack won't provide a very rewarding sensation. Also, the color scheme looks too dull and the monsters look like they were going with an "EXTREEEEEEEEME!" approach, which is just corny to me (the dragons are a good example).

Not to sure were you're getting this impression. It simply takes after a dark fantasy aesthetic, so everything has bit more grim detail than usual. Then again, there aren't many games which are subtle these days, so saying this is EXTREEEEEEEEME honestly isn't too egregious of a criticism.
On the subject of control and gameplay, I for one can attest that Demon's Souls didn't play like a standard hack-and-slash game. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's quite a bit more complicated than that. There's a bit more strategy built around the the equipment you use and how you use them. For example, a weapon may work in one situation, but not in another (i.e. spears are good for attacking in in narrow corridors where a sword would bounce off the wall, spears also allow you to block while you attack, however, they will will you parried and open if you hit an enemy with a raised shield).

Anyway, yeah, there has barely been any coverage for this game on here so here come the links... http://ps3.ign.com/articles/119/1197278p1.html

Also some trailers to build up the hype... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rC1ftGo ... Q&index=11

I wish I wasn't so busy, or else I would be playing this game once it came out.

Being the "cold and calculative" Spacegodzilla that I am, I bought this game in order to regain some humanity. *wink**wink*
I figured Only one who is soulless could beat a game with no soul itself. How very skreeonk wrong I was.

This game is skreeonk sentient, I swear to God. Its evil and ALL the time it is laughing out how big a piece of shit you are. skreeonk.
It isn't conderacting if i'm pissed.

Funny eh, turns out it's actually pretty unique and has been getting some pretty good reviews. That's why you should never judge a book by its cover.

This game makes you want to kill yourself. Seriosuly, I;m not exaggerating. This game is like crystal meth, its so unhealthy for you, but you're addicvted. This game is dangerous. 100% Serious. Anyone who intends to take this game seriously and try to beat it, I'm warning you that it break your mind. I'm strongly considering returning it tomorrow.

O.o Damn, your being broken down already Svitska? I knew that this game was gonna be tough, that it wasn't gonna hold your hand, much like Demon Souls. But come on, a game can't be THAT nightmarish.
