1) Nirvana

I really enjoy Nirvana because I feel I can really relate to Kurt Cobain. As well, I like how they mix punk and grunge together.

The rest, in no particular order:

Alice in Chains

If Nirvana is Punk mixed with Grunge, then Alice in Chains is Metal mixed with Grunge. Seriously, these guys have made some pretty awesome music and the band was at it's peak when Layne was the singer. The new singer actually deserves more credit then he is given, however. I went to one of their live shows, and it was absolutely incredible. Overall, awesome band.

Flying Lotus

Nice, alternative, mind blowing when you first hear it. Electronic music done right.

Akira Ifukbe

I feel like I would be doing disservice as a G-fan if I didn't list him. And yes, I do listen to Godzilla music outside of the movies. ToMG is my favorite score of his.

Metallica

I know these guys get enough attention already, but it is well deserved. Sure, some of their 90's albums sucked, but listen to everything from and before Black album and it's all great.

The Beatles

What's not to love? Hell, it's all we need.

Slayer

I'm kind of unsure putting these guys on the list, but hell, they made some kick ass music. I don't listen them too often, but Reign in Blood is just...awesome

Dead Kennedys

Probably one of my favorites out of all the 80's punk bands I can think of.

Mastodon

I like the element concept albums

Minor Threat

Pretty awesome punk band.

Love me some AIC, I saw them in Boise last year and holy shit..it sounded better than the albums. Definitely one of the best rock performances I've seen, despite the Layne absence (new guy holds his own though, and is actually a better live performer than Layne was).

Here's my top ten of all time (I don't even listen to some of these bands anymore, this list reflects the bands that have had the most profound effect on me throughout the years):

1. Opeth - not just awesome metal..awesome MUSIC, period. I've never heard a band that combines genres so seamlessly and effortlessly before. Epic, epic shit; but also an acquired taste that demands (and rewards) multiple listens.

The rest, in no particular order...

Metallica (80's) - one of the reasons why I picked up the guitar

Carlos Santana - another reason I picked up guitar

Alice in Chains

Dream Theater - (can't stand them anymore, but they were my number one favorite for years)

Akira Ifukube - one of my earliest influences...I honestly think his use of chromatics (12-tone scale) is one of the reasons I love dark music (Opeth is also VERY chromatic)

Jeremy Soule - his Oblivion score is sublime. My favorite classical score, ever.

Nevermore - Fantastic metal band.

Daniel Licht - Dexter Season One score. Nuff said.

Evergrey - another great melodic metal band (too bad they went to shit with the past few albums)

My current top ten list is completely different, however, and seems to change daily. A lot of jazz and old-school prog lately.

Yeah, they played in Portland, ME last year and it was AMAZING. And I think your right, some of the videos I have seen of Layne's live performances were mediocre (might have had something to do with the heroin, idk).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eipuJPgHFZk < Like this concert is pretty badass in '91

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSTXOwNb ... re=related < And then we have this concert in '96. While the instruments sound very nice, Layne's vocals are lacking. I think it might be because this was further into addiction.

I'm really not sure, they just don't sound good to me anymore. After being a devoted fan for three years I finally saw them live, met them, and then the passion just kinda started flickering out a few weeks afterward. They sound really cheesy to me now, and I have a hard time tolerating LaBrie's voice and Ruddess' wankage nowadays. Their genre-mixing also has a cut-and-paste feel compared to other progressive bands IMO.

Petrucci will forever be one of my top three guitarists, though. When he's not playing a billion and a half notes, he's one of the tastiest players out there (refer to his Tokyo G3 performance of "Glasgow Kiss"). Unbelievable phrasing. Also, I'm interested to hear what Mike Mangini will bring to the table - I like Portnoy and all, but guys like Mangini, Gavin Harrison etc just simply slay him when it comes to groove, feel, and technical ability; and the one thing DT needs most is more feel.

John Myung is one of the greatest bassists out there, but you would never know it by listening to DT's last several albums. Why doesn't he play anything cool anymore? Seems like he just follows the root note of whatver Petrucci is playing, most of the time.

It was undoubtedly the heroin, particularly later in his career (like that 96 video you posted). Check out the old live black and white video of "Man in the Box" from 1991 (or 92? Forgot, it was part of a video release) - he sounded just as good as the studio performance on it.

Yet, in 96, he also busted out one of his best vocal performances ever - MTV Unplugged, and you can tell he was high as shit during that one.

I also think Jerry Cantrell is playing better nowadays too. The whole band sounded so tight.
