I always found Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, like a lot of the Heisei movies, to be a bit of a 'hit-and-miss'. On the one hand I couldn't think of a better way to have closed the Heisei series - Godzilla vs. the Oxygen Destroyer. It really brings the entire series full circle and closes with one of my all-time favorite scenes in any Godzilla movie. Godzilla's meltdown is the thing most memorable about the movie and it is done so unbelievably well. Godzilla, alone and dying, while Akira Ifukube's theme "Requiem" plays in the background. Godzilla's final roar and the wonderful CGI effect as he finally dies really gives the movie an emotional feeling. What helps is that this Godzilla, the Heisei Godzilla, is the same version of the character that had been in all seven movies. The climax that surrounded the scene: Godzilla Junior's death and Godzilla's last stand against Destoroyah, was done excellently. The monster drama is well-done here. You really feel for Godzilla as a character.
Unfortunately, the rest of the movie is not quite as up to par. As usual, Kawakita's awesome effects are countered by some really mediocre ones. Godzilla's rampage in Hong Kong is ruined by horrible matted shots of people walking calmly in the picture as Godzilla rampages around them. Destoroyah is your standard late-Heisei era beam spammer, needlessly bulky and nearly immobile. His design is awe-inspiring, but his execution is terrible. The flying Destoroyah prop moves awkwardly in the air. And the Aggregates are so obviously ripped off from the Xenomorph aliens. On the plus side, the Burning Godzilla is fantastic. And Godzilla Junior is a great design as well. The Super X-III is my least favorite of all the flying mechs, but that's just personal preference. Its freeze cannon is a neat effect, however, and I like the CGI freezing of Godzilla.
For what was supposed to be a final film, I was disappointed that the human characters do little but shoot at the monsters and stand around on the sidelines. Miki was never high on my list of favorite human characters in the Godzilla series, but I find her almost as annoying as the previous film - Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla. Once again her character exists only to be inconsistent. On the one hand she doesn't want to harm Godzilla or Junior, but assists in aiding G-Force anyway, same as the two films previously. None of the other main human characters do much but stand around and explain the events of the film. They are as bland as ever here.
Akira Ifukube's scores are marvelous. I cannot pick out a theme that I didn't like. My favorite was Requiem, but I love Destoroyah's ominous, threatening theme. I also love Junior's sad, haunting theme as well. Even the song playing over the montage at the end of the movie is nice.
All in all, despite its flaws, I enjoy this movie. It's the kind of film that can only be done once and for that, I appreciate it.

starscream82 wrote:i never liked destroyah. i always thought that if godzilla were to die it would be a result of mecha-g or ghidorah. i think a villian with a little more history would have made for a stronger story. plus destroyah looks like a mutated baragon.
