Ah yes, but they wouldn't have been oversized dinosaurs had they been in this film, now would they?

Unless you utterly warp their design, the idea of an ankylosaurus and a squirrel lizard being legendary divine guardians is damn near ridculous. A golden dragon of light (based off the legendary Oroch) and a brightly colored, huge moth just screams 'regal divine guardian'.

So yeah, even if you want the obscure kaijus to shine, they have to be appropriate for the role. Putting Varan as a regal uardian is like making King Caesar a embodiment of mankind's nuclear activities.

And yet Baragon is a monster of the same type as Anguirus: an inexplicably large dinosaur that survived to the present day. I didn't think Baragon came off as ridiculous in GMK, and outclassed as he was, I think ol' floppy ears gave a hell of a showing.

I first saw this in, must have been 2004? Maybe 2005, but anyway:
I seriosly, shit you not, thought that Baragon was meant to reperesnt dogs and his getting killed was a metaphor for dog fighting.
He wasn't, of course, but this certainly shows that everything is up to interpretation...

"Beam Battle"? For serious?

Anyways, while I didn't really like GMK Ghidorah, I think a film with Godzilla fighting Baragon and Varan and Anguirus would become a bit redundant, as they are all dinosaurian, and three are of the distinct "biped/quadraped" type.

Ahhh, I kinda wished the movie could have been made in it's original intention, while I loved the way Mothra looked, I would have loved to see Varan in a new movie, or any movie not the original, beside that tease in DAM.

As others have pointed out, Varan would've had a good shot at having Mothra's role and by default that means Anguirus would've had King Ghidorah's role. But with that in mind, I suspect Anguirus wouldn't have had much of a "lead" role among the three monsters and it would have been more of a battle between Godzilla and three more or less equal monsters. I've been critical of KG being a "good" monster even if I love the movie, but I much prefer the three monsters we got anyhow.

While GMK's monster roster is a point of debate, we do understand why Toho went with those three. Baragon, Mothra, and King Ghidorah all have performed well in Toho's favorite monster surveys among the Japanese, so why not cash in on monster with big appeal?

Had they hired a idiot like me, I'd have been fine with keeping Mothra but used King Caesar instead of Baragon and used some other dragon monster. Try something new, ideally. It doesn't have to look anything like this, but Matt Frank's beautiful work shows a beautiful and majestic yet aggressive looking fire dragon could've worked well.

Ehhhh I can see it work.

Also in Varan's film he was perceived as a god. Granted it was village superstition

It would've been pretty frickin' cool to have Anguirus and Varan in the movie. I could see Anguirus and Goji going toe to toe... Anguirus and Godzilla were evenly matched in their first film together. THAT Anguirus was tough and fierce and that battle could've gone either way. Besides, he could've gotten a flashy second form that would've looked just as cool as (or cooler than) ol' chicken legs there.

Mothra worked fine. Ghidorah was the bad choice. I think Toho should have allowed Anguirus or Varan to stay, one or the other, replaced the loser with Mothra.

I always thought GMK Ghidorah looked like a bamf.

Poor Varan. The guy keeps getting pushed aside for other monsters just like Bgan. At least he got to be in two movies, more if you count stock footage and got to be in some games, even playable in GU and actually got into a cool fight with an anti kaiju plane in the Godzilla 2000 book.

That was one of my favorite scenes in the book. I would love to see Varan take on the military one on one if only as a guest monster in a Godzilla film.

Just imagine if he got kept in GvG from the RoKG draft. He'd be to us what Anguirus is now!

It's a shame Rodan got kicked out of the rewrite for that script too.

I personally don't like GMK, mostly due to the radical changes in the monster's personalities (namely Godzilla and KG).

I think GAV would have still had its problems, but I would have vastly preferred that over what we ended up with. On a side note, Varan may have been the leader of the trio due to his flying/gliding abilities and the fact that he was one of Kaneko's favorite kaiju.

The poster by Matt Frank is AWESOME.

If I were to redo the movie, I would have had Godzilla as more of an anti hero over an actual villain. The roles would be switched, having Godzilla as a protagonist and the Yamato as more or less the villains. Godzilla would merely be a powerful animal defending his territory and the other kaiju would be angry gods attacking Japan. I'd also change the roster, I'd keep Baragon (as well as make him a little larger than Godzilla and give him his lava breath), I'd have Varan as a water/ice god, and I'd turn Ghidorah into an outright villain. It would be similar to Mononoke where there is no truly evil monsters. Godzilla is just...Godzilla, and the god kaiju have been enraged by mankind's hubris.

Got a Godzilla design worked up as well... I'll post it once my scanner gets fixed. Ghidorah would look like a cross between the Heisei and "Grand" designs.
