Sympathetic or not?

Sympathetic or not?

Postby Gexistentialist » Thu Sep 15, 2011 3:54 pm

Should Godzilla be portrayed as a sympathetic character or a Complete Monster? I think he should be gray: he does HIGHLY questionable stuff, but he has his reasons.

A "Complete Monster" (and I'm assuming we're using TVTropes' definition) can't be sympathetic. The point of a Complete Monster is that they're completely lacking in any redeemable features whatsoever.

Sorry, i kept thinking of the scene in (Godzilla vs King Ghidorah) where has that moment with Japanese soldier, while yes i want Godzilla to be mostly a complete monster threw-out the film i wouldn't mind a few sympathetic moment's just as long as i don't feel like i'm watching lassie.

Even at the end of the Original 54 an 84 film, you felt sympathy for Godzilla when he died, that's mainly what i meant.

I want him to be a monstrous animal. Not evil, just true to his nature. However, I like more intelligent Godzilla, with a bit of emotion and a sense of purpose, so basically like King Kong if King Kong was the Punisher (there's an image for ya!).

As for the actual topic I actually want to root for Godzilla. He's the reason I'm going to see this thing, after all. If I have to choose between one or the other, then I'll go with the sympathetic choice.

If a Complete Monster is making you feel sorry for him, then he's not playing his part very well. Complete Monsters are generally despicable, vile, remorseless, sinister, and utterly wicked with no excuse or justification given for why they do the things they do. If there comes a point where you negate all that for a moment like Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, where all the heinous acts the villain commits are paired up with something like the Shindo scene, then he stops being one. The Godzilla in GvsKG isn't a Complete Monster, neither are the ones used in the original film or the '84 film.

I want him to be sympathetic. If he's a complete monster hellbent on the killing of innocents, then I just won't like him as much. Quite frankly, I don't like GMK Godzilla for that reason. There are those of us in the fandom who want this movie to be dark to an extreme level, even gorey in some cases. I think that would take all the fun out of Godzilla. He's not a demented slasher. I want LP to look to the Marvel Movie-verse and Star Trek for the tone they need to go with for this movie.

I would prefer sympathetic, just so Godzilla can be presented as an actual character and not just a physical sense of "conflict." Iron Giant is a good example of what I mean.

Subtly so, yes. I want the audience to get he's also a victim in his own way, but I don't wanna see a whiny, annoying character preaching for him. No Mikis or Kennys please.

And I don't think Godzilla needs to be sympathetic to be likable. A good villain is just as lovable as a good hero, maybe even more so. Hell, I'd cheer for the big guy even if he was stompin' on orphans.

Both. i want to see something in the lines of either GvsKg 91 , ROG or G2k.
Make him destructive like the monster he is but remain somewhat Sympathetic and a little emotional.

sympathetic.

He's been truamatized by his mutation and while it doesn't excuse his rampages it does explain them.

I always liked Godzilla as either an appealing semi-villain (KKvG, MvG, GvBiollante) or a neutral/villainous force who incidentally combats an even more dangerous enemy (GvSea Monster, Monster Zero, G2K, etc.).

So yes, he can be sympathetic, but only insofar as he's the lesser of two evil monsters.

Godzilla will always have my sympathy, even if he were a villain. Nostalgia is just too powerful in that case.

But I think the best way to portray him here is as some badass beast outta hell. Sure he deserves some form of sympathy (assuming he's a mutated animal again), but he's just so damn powerful and kickass that he wouldn't really need it from anyone.

GMK was a fun movie, but the "complete monster" goji was sort of a backlash, imo. Even the original Gojira didn't seem like that big of a dick.

I want to feel for him somewhat but he should still be a destructive monster. If that makes any sense. I just want him to be more than a giant animal. This sounds over done, but he should be a force of nature. When he shows up you don't know how bad the damage will be.

Both sympathetic and animalistic.

I always found the mannerism of megarogoji a flat out wrong interpretation of the character because:1)Its not the way Godzilla is supposed to act. 2)It just plain dumb. 3)Godzilla is an animal.

I know perfectly that Legendaryzilla is not going to have Megarogoji's mannerism,i just want to share my opinion on Godzilla's personality.

Sympathetic for sure. Godzilla is living being that has been horribly wronged by mankind, and his rampages are his primal, animalistic way of showing his pain and torment. He's a prehistoric reptile, he can't decipher between evil and innocent people, so he just squashes them all. For the sake of those innocent people, he obviously must be stopped, but it's not really his fault that he does what he does.

(I just hope the whole sympathetic angle won't be as painfully half-assed as GINO's boo-hoo sad-eyes death scene)
