Improved special effects (to an extent)
Fresh ideas (particularly the Futurian and Biollante plot)

Dislikes:
Characters (M-11 doesn't count...he's too cool for the Heisei)
Flying scenes (seriously, a shadow over Disney in Japan?!)
Sub-par acting
The use of American characters (they always seemed out of place and in it for the American viewers to relate to...the Showa and GFW did a better job with this). The only exceptions go to M-11, Wilson, and his green-suited friend.

The Heisei is my least favorite G-series though, so im probably being harsher than necessary.

Loved:
Godzilla, Rodan, and King Ghidorah's redesigns.
SpaceGodzilla & Godzillasaurus
Some great battle scenes (I loved the smackdown between Godzilla and King Ghidorah (and Mecha King Ghidorah), the skirmish between Godzilla and Rodan, and Godzilla vs. Battra Larva in particular)
Return of Godzilla
When Godzilla blasts the Futurians

Liked:
Baby Godzilla, Godzilla Junior
Destoroyah's flying form
Fire Rodan pulling an Anguirus and getting rocked by MG. Boy had a lotta spunk.
Godzilla's power

Disliked:
Little Godzilla
Lack of Anguirus
That SpaceGodzilla barely moved
Miki Saegusa
MOGUERA
MechaGodzilla's design

Hated:
Too many beams
That MechaGodzilla and King Ghidorah weren't from space
How boring G vs SG was

I think the Heisei series has some great ideas but generally poor execution. What bothers me the most is this assembly line feeling, there is little variety in the movies. I think it's the worst of the 3 Japanese eras.
Every film should have at least one animal attack.

- The back story and overall impression of the Heisei era is one of its strongest aspects. The elements set up are really fresh and intriguing with lots of story potential. It's impressive how, despite being the successor to the much longer and more varied Showa films, manages to not go over ground all ready covered.

- The music. First of all, Reijiro Koroku created one of the finest scores in the franchise. It's a dark and powerful, but with a sense of campy operatic grandeur that suits Godzilla perfectly. It doesn't get sang enough praise, IMHO. Why he wasn't asked to return for Godzilla vs. Biollante is beyond me and it's a shame that he wasn't. Secondly, Akira Ifukube, when not creating some of his best work, was ironing out classic pieces to be re-used.

- Special effects bits. Era has my favorite Godzilla roar, Mecha King Ghidorah is friggin' cool, Biollante is an incredible creation, and there's some damn-near-perfect work to be had in The Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biollante in particular. The matte work is flawless overall and easily one of Kawakita's strongest talents. How we got embarrassing scenes like Godzilla coming ashore in Godzilla 2000 I will never know.

- "Adding on" to the Godzilla mythology. Doing what any good "reboot" should do, the Heisei films (starting off and finishing specifically) did a good job of respectfully building onto established mythos. In The Return of Godzilla we learn that Godzilla absorbs radiation; an idea that seems completely obvious in hindsight. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah throws in the novelty of seeing Godzilla "pre-1954" and of the Godzillasaurus (a concept I'm not entirely sold on, but is novel and appropriate enough). Godzilla vs. Destroyah sees Godzilla's own greatest source of power being his downfall. Those sort of things.

- Has a diffident "Beginning, Middle, End" which makes it feel like a saga. It's only natural that this series would end in tragedy and Godzilla's death. Even a creature like Godzilla, living in a world that has dedicated absurd amounts of money to the creation of Superweapons that exist only to kill him (and rightfully so), would die eventually. Why people think they should reopen a Saga that was closed just right is beyond me.

Dislikes

- The Heisei Godzilla is a floppy, chunky mess overall. Despite having interesting design flourishes I'd like to see return (shark teeth, dark eyes, roar, etc.) it's a mediocre design.

- Miki, while useful and interesting in Godzilla vs. Biollante, her status as the defacto human protagonist and her bizarre shift to sympathizing with a Godzilla that is, for all intents and purposes, a skreeonk makes her annoying. She's tragically over-rated.

- The plots are vague and contrived. The entire process for the creation of King Ghidorah is a good example, as is Spacegodzilla.

- All the original monsters, with the exception of Destroyah, are just clones or effectively "repaints" of another monster. Biollante? Godzilla DNA. Mecha King Ghidorah? Cyborg Ghidorah. Battra? Evil Mothra. Spacegodzilla? shitty Godzilla. Lame.

- The effects work after Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah was just sloppy and lacked refinement. A perfect example that pretty much explains every problem with the Heisei effects work (and I think Arrow has pointed this out before) would be in Godzilla vs. Destroyah where Godzilla is matted perfectly into the city scape of Hong Kong...and there's people just sorta' walking around not looking to be in a hurry. That sort of thing peppers the effects work all over the place in these films and there's basically no excuse for it.

Yeah I think they got sloppy after GvsKG's success they figured anything featuring godzilla could make money.Godzilla vs mothra is a prime example of this it is arguably the worst Godzilla film of the entire series even the whole franchise, but it was a huge success.

The scores. Every Heisei Godzilla film had a great score and each fit the film they were in perfectly (yes even Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla had an alright score)

Tight Continuity
We get some backstory on what Godzilla was before he was mutated
Some good effects (Return of Godzilla, Godzilla vs Biollante had some pretty damn good effects work that still holds up today)

Godzilla's death in Godzilla vs Destoroyah & Him while falling into Mt. Mihara at the end of Return of Godzilla
Some new monsters (Biollante, Battra & Destoroyah)
Some of the redesigns were pretty good
Some pretty interesting ideas (like Anti Neclear bacteria)

Dislikes:

Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla
Sometime after Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, Koichi Kawakita started to half ass his effects work and in some of the latter Heisei films it clearly shows
Boring & flat characters
Most of the execution of the flying monsters was just........off

Everybody else is doing it, so:
Likes:
Both '84 and '89-'95 Godzilla designs.
Most of the music was enjoyable; the soundtrack for '84 is my favorite of the series.
The new monsters were ok. Never really cared for Spacegodzilla, but I liked Biollante, Battra, and Destoroyah
The special effects were enjoyable most of the time.
The continuity
The fact that they left out monsters like Gigan, Titanosaurus, and Anguirus; they probably would'nt have done the characters justice

Dislikes:
The beam fights
Rodan and Mechag's redesign
the generally uninteresting characters
Godzilla's ridiculous power. The nuclear pulse was just ridiculous and unnecessary

The so-so's:
I kind of liked Miki's character, though she got a little annoying in Mechagodzilla and Spacegodzilla
I thought several of the stories were ok
The time-travel plot; it never bothered me much. It jumbled things up a bit, but I didn't think it was a big deal
Mogera was an ok redesign

The best part of the Heisei series for me was Godzilla 90s. My favorite design hands down.

Major dislike is lack of hand to hand combat throughout the series. Beamwars ftl.

-Biollante (one of my all time favorite kaiju)
-SPX up until 91'..but even KING GHIDORAH has some shoddy stuff in it.
-Godzilla's design in '84, and '89/'91
-Burning Godzilla
-The Super X and Super X-2
-Commander Aso (the only awesome reoccurring character)
-The music (Obviously Ifukube's scores, and especially RETURN's, and yes, even BIOLLANTE's)

Dislikes:
-GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA. This movie is seriously awful. I'd rather watch SPACEGODZILLA. No joke.
-Mothra Imago (looks like complete ass)
-MechaDuckzilla and Fatzilla '93
-The marionettes for the flying monster are all pretty terrible, with Mothra being the biggest offender.
-Crappy characters after '91
-Lack of hand-to-hand combat after '91
-Certain things are way too derivative of stuff seen in Hollywood-made films
-SPARKS...oh god, the sparks.
-Miki Saegusa
-Baby Godzilla (He's always looked weird to me, I don't know why)
-Overall laziness of Kawakita's SPX after the 80's. Seriously wtf happened?

That's all I can think of at the moment.

heisei series sucked

Postby tenup » Wed Sep 14, 2011 10:30 am

With the exception of G Returns and Biolante this run was the worst out of the showa and milennium imo. And no I didn't like the suit modifications after biolante. Why I dislike it so much? Well for one since they were all done in the 90's they were poor update versions of the original cult classic films. To me the heisei films tarnished the image of Godzilla and I think they were overrated. Godzilla didn't come off with any intelligence in these films and was too massive to be considered physically logical even in its own sci fi realm. The king staggered slowly and roared every other 5 seconds for no apparent reason. I hate what toho did with Godzilla in this period. It was hard to watch and even impossible to view for todays standards.

If Gareth Edwards uses the heisei films as the standard reference for the upcoming film I fear for what's to come. Not to justify anything but I can see why tristar felt it necessary to change the creatures physical appearance from its previous incarnation. I can't see how anyone would want a Godzilla that is obese, immobile, beam spamming and roars when there's nothing going on? Just watch vs Space Godzilla and tell me this era wasn't a mess.
