Exotic Pets thread

Postby Inferno Rodan » Fri Sep 09, 2011 9:53 pm

Yes, I know we have a pet thread already. But it's overrun with cute and fluffy things. I think the more... unique animals deserve their own thread. Besides, this will allow us to have some more focused discussions.

So... show off your exotics and their setups, discuss, ask questions, etc.

Zilla. Most of you have seen him by now.

Image
My emperor scorpion tank. Just got them a little over a week ago. There's two in there, one of which is walking around on the right side of the tank in this pic. The other is in the big rock on the left (she literally hasn't left it since I first put her in the tank).

Image
This is the one that was walking around in the previous pic. They're not used to being handled yet, so he's kinda tensed up here.

Image
Gamera, my turtle. Found him on the driveway back in 2003 when cleaning up after a hurricane (I joked that he must've flown from the lake a few blocks away, hence his name). The fish are two goldfish (which originally started out as feeders, but Gamera is a lazyass) and two plecostomas (for reference, the larger pleco in the back is ~14 inches long). Honestly, red-eared sliders barely qualify as exotics, but it wouldn't feel right to leave him out.

I've always really wanted a black and white tegu. They just seem like pretty awesome pets to have.

We use to have a green iguana way back. My Mom insisted it needed protein... so she gave it dog food. I have never seen such a complete u-turn in an animal's attitude. It just got straight up viscous and attacked people.

I had a green iguana when I was four or five, I remember that we had take them away since they thought they would become too violent after it bite me. I had a few smaller Chameleons when I was younger and I remember one of them give birth to small ones back in 1998.

I own no exotic pets, but a friend of my father's raised snakes, and ironically, another friend of my father's owned an iguana that I named "Godzilla" - unfortunately the iguana died not too long later.

If I didn't have dogs that like to eat little furry things, I'd probably get sugar gliders. They are adorable. And from what I've read, actually incredibly easy to care for. You just have to spend time with them when you're home, which just means letting them sleep in your pocket. Did I mention that they're adorable?

A guy was selling some exotic pets in my local flea market a few years back, including sugar gliders. When one jumps into your hand and just curls up and falls asleep, you immediately fall in love. Adorable little bastards, but I'm partial to dogs, so I would never risk having one just to let it get hurt by a dog.

The most "exotic" pet I have is an African clawed frog. He doesn't do much, he's basically like a fish, just kinda swims around and doesn't want to interract with anyone. But that's fine, as long as he's happy.

I've always wanted a reptile of some kind. Perhaps a Chinese Water Dragon, Bearded Dragon, a turtle or some kind of monitor. I absolutely love reptiles, but I realize they require a lot of care that I currently can't afford to give them. So hopefully I'll have the means to take care of one in the future.

I always wanted a Iguana, I have a few questions,

What do they eat?
Are they friendly?
How long do they live?
What equipment would I need to take care of one?

Used to have a Leopard Gecko. Then when I went to college, I gave her to a technician who worked at my lab who is also a reptile enthusiast.

Most exotic pet I've ever had was a green anole aka american chameleon, this was like 10 years ago I had her.

I've always wanted a corn snake as a pet I don't know why but I do, that and a tarantula despite have a semi fear of large spiders.

It's a work in progress please suggest to me how to improve it

Honestly, most reptiles don't require any more care than a dog. It's just that they require a different kind of care, and most people aren't used to that.

1. They eat fruits and vegetables.
2. Depends on their inherent personality. Some can become incredibly friendly and affectionate if handled regularly, while others will never warm up to you no matter how much you work with them.
3. They live 15-20 years if cared for properly.
4. The equipment you'll need will depend on where you live. Since I live in Florida, I can leave Zilla out on the screened-in porch for most of the day for 9 months out of the year. For most people, they'll eventually need to custom build a large enclosure for their iguana. There's several great websites with in-depth info on iguana care, so I suggest checking them out.

My uncle owned a bobcat. "Robbie" (I know, unique for a bobcat right?) was not anti-social, not solitary---he was actually a social butterfly. He was like a friendly house cat. I've been told that pet bobcats never take kindly to other people, but those who say this never knew Rob.

Not the best picture, but that's my recently acquired blue crayfish. I originally thought she was female (sexed the crayfish like a typical North American species), but it's possible that it's an Australian species, so I might be completely wrong. For now, we treat her as a female named Luna.

The one thing she definitely has over other pets is that one of her hides is a little Triceratops skull. Yeah, not many pets sleep in a Triceratops skull.

A relative of mine has a Quaker Parrot. The bird loves to fly around the room, ( when his wings weren't cliped) and make random animal sounds like quacking, meowing, and barking. One time I was at the exotic pet store we got the bird at, they had a caiman ( a crocodilian if you didn't know) that was atleast 3-4ft long. Of course the price was insanely high, in the thousands.

Just looked them up. They are insanely cute.

Are 3 grey Squirrels considered exotic? They are local animals... but they are rather unusual pets.

Eragon, my juvenile savanah monitor. Started as a feisty little fella, is now much calmer. Pretty inquisitive too. Isn't one to be held a whole lot though. It's not that he dislikes it, he's very squirmy. When he's out of his terrarium, he wants to explore, and I don't think he's quite ready to go free roaming.

Wouldn't give him away for the world.
