Not sure if this is an elaborate hoax or not. But it's definitely causing a stir among the interwebz.

I have a feeling that this game is going to spark a lot controversy with people.

 What...the...f**k?

I don't know if it's fake or not, but if not, are people THAT desperate to make games?

It's probably fake though, thankfully.

Looks like a hoax. And i don't mean just the topic.

First of all, there is no "company" website. Even small-time games nowadays made by small companies have a company website, not just game website.

For an RTS trailer, you don't really see any 3D graphics or anything. If this was a grand startegy game like Europa Universalis, that type of graphical trailer would still feel "dry". For an RTS it is simply not believable.

There is nothing else on the website except the trailer. all other game-to-be-released sites have more stuff on them.

So yes, final verdict is: Hoax.

and you know what is funny? If this was a game about the Ancient Roman slave trade, or ancient chinese slave trade, or a fanstasy world slavery, then there would be no controversy. Nobody would give a damn.

But as soon as you bring US whites vs blacks into the picture, then suddenly slavery becomes controversial. in all other context however, salvery is not controversial.
Call me weird, but I think its hypocrisy.

The biggest thing that gave it away as being fake was the rating. Sony and MS have confirmed they won't release a AO game on their systems.

Well considering this happened a long time ago before we were even born I wouldn't find it offensive either. Now if they made the game take place in U.S.A. today on the other hand, maybe but even then I'd just keep telling myself it's just a game.

Honestly I think whoever made this trailer wanted to see how many people start playing the race card.

Either its all a troll thing (like four chan and the sort), BUT it may actually be some sort of social science research project - maybe they are going to measure how many people post negative opinions, or how large percentage will play the race card or use explitives etc. I've actually seen some things like that made as research (well maybe less controversy-baiting, but setting up fake websites or adverts is used in research).

Maybe they wanna see how many white people say it's racist as opposed to blacks. Funny thing about the whole Resident Evil 5 thing is that most of the people saying it's racist against blacks we're white. But I digrace, RE5 didn't deserve that bad press. This might but like you said it probably is either trolling or an attampt at some kind of experiment.

Um, American slavery was NOT that long ago, and the effects of generations of institutionalized slavery and discrimination do not go away overnight. Of course people would be sensitive about it. I highly doubt this is real, but regardless, it's completely tasteless.

Whatever, I wasn't alive back then not my problem. Not saying this game isn't tasteless, real or fake, but this shit DID happen in the past and people need to learn to move on cause guess what? There's always going to be some asshole who hates you for stupid shit like skin.

That doesn't mean we should make games based on it. I'm not saying we should not allow it if that's what people want to create because I don't believe in censorship, but it sure says something about people who want to play a game which depicts, perhaps even glorifies, real life crimes against humanity.

I mean, I don't think most people are walking around with a chip on their shoulders about slavery, but it's pretty skreeonk up if a bunch of kids are getting their kicks playing a game about enslaving and beating Africans.

I know what you're saying. It'd be one thing if this was teaching you about the history of this shit but at the same time it kinda sends mixed messages when you play the slave owners.

I think we both see this as a touchy subject and for good reason.

I don't see how this being not long ago makes it any less or more disturbing. The Naking massacre or the Holocaust are not going to become any less horrible after 200 years you know.

I know that for americans 19th century slavery may be more engaging on an emotional level, as it "hits closer to home" or something.
But reasonably speaking, it is no more disturbing than Roman slavery. Its the procedure, violence and underlying beliefs that make slavery horrible, not the nationality or race of the victims or perpetrators. And certainly not the date.

BTW, who cares if its a troll thing or not, at least it provoked some intelligent deabate. Maybe that was its purpose?

Yeah but you have people today are can be effected by it since they have family member that where part of it. I think if a game based off of the Holocaust where you play as a Nazi would be no different.

Here's the thing though Hellspawn

My Great Grandfather, straight up was a slave. My Father's Dad's Dad was born a slave circa 1860 (The men in my patriacal line are strentched out we have kids late) and this really doesn't offend me. Even knowing how close to home it hits, doesn't really bother me.
