You can not really look at this in a scientific matter because it is a movie with supernatural and mystique elements to it. I believe it just a symbolic way to show that the "character" of Godzilla will never die and will continue onward.

Just because there's mysticism in it does not mean we have to forgo the laws of science.

Your reasoning is faulty.

Most of you have got it figured out pretty well. The Godzilla in GMK is supposed to be the same Godzilla from the first film, so the idea is that Godzilla cannot be killed. He can defeated, his body can be disintegrated or blown up, but none of it is permanent... as long as Japan ignores their responsibilities for the past, Godzilla will exist to remind them.

Also, in the GMK timeline the souls of the war dead were a part of Godzilla from the start. In the original GODZILLA, the monster attacks almost like an invading force... striking shipping routes (Japan's lifeline), then outlying islands, then entering Tokyo and marching on the capitol. For decades, Japanese scholars and viewers have suggested there was a motive for Godzilla's actions, and one of the theories was that Godzilla symbolized those who died in WWI returning for some justiceI. Kaneko used that as the background in GMK to explain the monster's motivation in both 1954 and 2002.

And lastly, regeneration is listed as one of Godzilla's abilities in GMK. It just doesn't work the same as in the Heisei films where Godzilla was tough, healed almost immediately from wounds, but could be killed (both G'54 and the Heisei Godzilla died in that series). In GMK, Godzilla's main defense is that his skin is practically invulnerable (if you're not getting wounded you don't need instant regen), and if something catastrophic (like an Oxygen Destroyer) happens Godzilla would regenerate completely over time. Coming back from being liquefied shows pretty good regeneration abilities.

^ Exactly my interpretation from the first viewing on. I didn't even realize this was such a debate until a year or more later, when some friends got into a bitching match over it.

GMK Godzilla is a super natural being, I think he died but will be reborn years later. He appears to have a type of immortality where you can die but will just reborn later on similar to Doomsday from DC Comics.

Exactly.

Why even show the beating heart, except to make the point that Godzilla isn't completely dead?

Aside from that, I've heard that a long-standing feature of Toho's Godzilla "Bible" (what they show to prospective screenwriters, to let them know in advance what can and can't be done in a Godzilla film)... is the provision that Godzilla does not die.

SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN GODZILLA VS. DESTROYER....

Even at the end of Godzilla Vs. Destroyer, the screenwriter had to arrange an immediate transition from Godzilla's meltdown to Godzilla Junior's resurrection, so that (a) Godzilla survived, in some form.

So I always assumed that Toho just insisted that the end of GMK, depict some sign of Godzilla's continuing existence. Hence the heart.

The way I see it is that while Godzilla's body died in GMK but his heart & his soul never will die out and as long as Japan continues to ignore the events of WWII, Godzilla will come again one day.
