Re-watched this with some people tonight. They seemed to enjoy it for the most part, with some complaints about the highly implausible science fiction (even for a kaiju movie) and the poor CGI. The characters were one dimensional, but they're stock character types in Japanese fiction, so they almost function as a bit of satire. It doesn't take much characterization for them to be somewhat endearing as well as humorous in a tongue in cheek way, so you can get a chuckle at the major's hilariously stereotypical tsundere behavior toward Kudo without their relationship being very fleshed out.

Aside from a few shots of bad CGI, the monsters and fight scenes looked pretty great. I love this Godzilla suit, and Megaguirus is a pretty cool creature with a unique fighting style in the Godzilla series. All in all, a fun movie as long as you shift your brain into neutral. I think I'd give it a B? :mudkip:

I still enjoy watching the movie even if it's not one of my high-ranking Godzilla flicks and is in the bottom half of the Millennium series. It mixes a bit of campiness with a bit of seriousness/horror (the scene where Meganulon attacks the couple or the very aggressive, near-scary apperance of Megaguirus, for two) and I think that rubs many (including me) the wrong way. I'm not attached to the lead character and Hajime Kudo is just an annoying character, not to mention I wasn't taken with the acting. That's the kind of stuff -even in a G movie- that heavily dampens its appeal. But what irks me most of all is just the wasted potential. I really liked Megaguirus and her origin story, but the rest of the movie was mediocre.

So it's still fun, but it's a definite "meh" in the franchise as a whole.

I think the picture is just aggressively...bland. I like the sections with Godzilla facing the Mega-swarms, and I think Godzy was well-characterized throughout, with nice animalistic curiosity and such, but overall the movie lacked personality for me. I didn't (as many have said) like the characters or care about any of them. While I really liked the idea and the design of Megaguirus, the execution was just terrible in my opinion. Never does she appear to be actually flying, but just doing a sort of zero-g hover. I think Toho should have employed a lot more CGI for the adult, maybe even incorporating fast-moving CG wings with the physical prop whenever it was in the air. I love practical effects, and prefer they be utilized whenever possible, but once it becomes clear that you aren't going to get the look a scene requires that way, it's time to start using the other tools at your disposal.

There where parts of this movie that i enjoyed. As Cimmerian Dragon stated, i liked Godzilla facing the Mega Swarms, and i actually liked the flooding of the city which brough about Megaguirus, and i also like the majority of the fight scenes. But i did not like the bland, one dimensional characters that has been stated already.

This movie is kind of ok, not better than the other Millenium ones but enyoyable, The monster scenes and Fight scenes
are great to watch, but the characters just didnt convince me or feel any worries about them, Overall a Ok
movie not horrible but it couldve been better.

You sir. You have summed it up. I don't think I could have summed up my overall opinion of the film. There are fun aspects, but overall it doesn't do much for me.

I liked it. DIdnt really think it was bland. The characters werent anything special, but Megaguirus was a cool monster and the fight scene between her and Godzilla was great. I thought the black hole idea was pretty unique too. It may not be better than any of the other Millenium Godzilla movies, but its still pretty good and definitely has its moments.

It was an okay movie. I'd give it a C.

Eh, it was an okay movie. I didn't really like the recolored version of the G2K suit, but Megaguirus had a real sinister design that really could give a kid nightmares. I'm not saying I had nightmares after watching, but if you were young enough and you saw that creepy grin she did? Yikes...

I re-watched Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, and now I'm puzzled as to why it seems more praised than Megaguirus. Do fans just have a hard-on for Kiryu? I find Megaguirus a much more fun film.

Just my opinion, I find the Kiryu saga very bland.

^I agree that Godzilla vs. Megaguirus is a lot more fun than the Kiryu films, partly because it doesn't take itself so seriously. Sure, the effects and cinematography are way better in the Kiryu films, but that's about it.

I'm actually watching this movie right now. I still like it, in fact I enjoy it almost as much as GMK nowadays.

And if you don't enjoy it, it's just one film you can skip, not 2.

After re-watching bits of it a while ago a scene that wasn't funny before but its now.
When Godzilla is approaching the island, before the first dimension tide assault, and he's being attacked by jets and the Griffon.
Godzilla charges up his atomic breath and the jets are approaching and the Griffon is just floating there and at the last moment the Griffon moves out of the way and the jets get blasted.

No radio signal like, "attention blue leader, approach with caution". Just, "oh better get out of the way".
The Griffon was a waste of military resources. Should have just had a platoon of rocket launcher equipped soldiers on kayaks :huge:
