Godzilla Island: Television Series (1997)

Post by Terrier »

256 three minutes episodes, showed one per day for almost a year back in 1997... almost every monster in the Godzilla franchise, using bandai toys to "represent" them... Godzilla Island was an interesting way to bring back monsters that haven't been seen for years (Baragon, Gorosaurus, King Kaesar, Gigan...) in a kid-friendly tone...

Though the episodes may be dificult to find (Or understand, sience they are in Japanes), here is a web that describes the first six "episodes" (Wich are story arcs that lasted likes six or seven 3 minutes shorts) of the show.

Again, it's interesting how it pays homage to the movies in a funny way (Feels like a kids anime), and the posibilities were endless (A Nurse Jet Jaguar? Mothra and Gigan fighting before Final Wars? A purple Hedorah that creates fungus? Doghorah? Yes, plis!)

Some time ago there was an user that uploaded a lot of Godzilla Island episodes on Youtube (Though not in the right orded and with fakes titles or subtitles), but were deleted by orders of guess wich company...

Let's discuss.

I once found a site that described every single episode with videos to boot, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called.

Godzilla Island is one of those shows that is irresistible for hardcore fans.

Its a bad program for sure, but there is so much Toho lore just crammed in there that it's hard not to be impressed.

My favorite aspect was simply that Rodan was returned to a position of glory. You actually felt the character was important, and on par with Godzilla and Mothra... something the character hasn't enjoyed since the 1960's. Also, seeing Mothra Leo and Godzilla fight Hedorah can't be missed.

So, Toho's never released this in any media format?
He has told you, O man, what is good;
and fwhat does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,2
and to gwalk humbly with your God?

They did. It's available on DVD.
Yep, Toho released it on region 2 DVD. If you are interested in blowing $185 on it, it can be yours too!

well it is almost 13 hours long, and Japanese DVD's traditionally are more expensive, but yeah, it is a little pricy. Something like that should be in more of the $50-60 dollar range. Who knows, maybe it will get a more economical rerelease someday.
To all you dub preservationists, my friends, you have my eternal thanks 8-) . Never stop what you do, you are amazing!

It used to cost less as I recall, but I think the crappy dollar versus the yen has drove the price up (much like the 6th Perfect Collection Godzilla CD box jumped up $30 simply because our exchange rate is awful).

From what I saw, it good. Godzilla Island makes Godzilla, and every other monster more human, than they were in the Showa series. More monsters than Final Wars.

Those are bootlegs, and we're not allowed to discuss bootleg sellers here.
We're not allowed to discuss torrents either but guess what, people are anyway.

I read about this on the main site and it sounds like it's hysterical. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for it somewhere.

Here you have a dance scenne (With Anguirus breackdancing): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E6t37NRfN8 The brown Godzilla is actually Godzilla Junior.

The guy at the begining of the video is the "Comander", he has a daughter who pilotes Heisei Mechagodzilla, and said daughter has a a friend who seems to be kind of "special" controling Heisei MOGUERA, they also have a Showa Moguera, a Nurse Jet Jaguar and a Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar; the aliens have a Black Showa Mechagodzilla (Imagine it having a western duel with Heisei MG) and Mecha King Ghidorah among others. There was a purple, fungus-creating Hedorah, the so memorable Dororin, and a green Dogora (Look at the bottom).

There is an episode wich involves Godzilla, Megalon, Showa Moguera, Destoroyah and Gigan. Is it as epic as it sound? You be the judge: http://s679.photobucket.com/albums/vv15 ... eVideo.mp4

I remember being amazed when I first heard of this show. It sounded badass at first. Then I found out that the monsters were actually toys when I came across an episode on Youtube.

All I've seen is that clip that Terrier posted, and I'll be honest, that's what was so great about it for me. It was hilarious.
