College tips for a first timer?

Not exclusive to SC, book store rapage is a universal feature of our college education system.

Anyway, as Malchik suggested, be social. I was pretty "head down" my first years of college with the mentality of "don't need to be social, as I already have my high school friends"... and fully regret that as in my later years I made some fantastic friends in college and wish I had been as outgoing at the start as I was at the end.

Buy books online. They cost, like, a third of what book stores offer.

Oh, and stay away from huge heavy parties. Went to one in September and regretted the next day.

I think you've heard about the freshman 15. Yeah, try your best to find some healthy food stores or restaurants around your campus. College food at my campus was a heart attack on a bun, yet my friends say it's "healthy" compared to their mess hall food.

And if you're trying to get good grades, never study in your dorm. It'll have the highest number of distractions there. Hell, even the campus library isn't a good place, since there are always some asshats making a ruckus. Find some "special place" such as a restaurant where you know not many noisy people would go to, and study there.

Not every class. But still study for each, just get a feel for each one and see which one's you feel like you need to concentrate on more.

Nah. It all depends on how well you retain information. Do you think you need 2-3 hours? per hour?

What I did was this:

I got a digital voice recorder and I recorded my lectures. then, to "study", I put headphones on and listened to the lectures while playing videogames with the sound turned off. Worked every time for me.

I go to a community college. It's damn old and it they've added dozens of extra buildings over time. Takes forever to find any classes. Other than that it really is just like high school, except now people can smoke without getting in trouble.

Any college campus you don't live on just feels like an extension of high school. Not just community.

If you're going to college for a 4 year degree, I highly suggest going to a University and living on campus. Community colleges are great to save some money and get general education classes out of they way, but it really isn't anything like a University feel.

With college, it's not just about the content you are studying. You do focus on your particular major but you learn so much more about yourself and the type of person you are. The social and personality growth you see will be great. Take myself for example. Through high school, I was kind of shy. I didn't talk much and never spoke of my interests that might have people laugh at me (ex., Godzilla). However, now that I've been through a few years of college, I've been told that I am one of the most vocal people on campus. I've worked events, freshman orientation, and other events that "require" the ability to talk with all types of people.

You don't just learn about content in your books. You find yourself.

Another tip...have fun! Be social and have lots of fun! That doesn't have to mean drinking but do go to parties or campus events and hang out with people.
