Thrift Stores AHOY!

Postby Svitska Donkun » Tue Aug 16, 2011 5:38 pm

I am aiming to begin collecting Godzilla videos, for their nostalgic appeal and because they look good on a shelf.

This whole tirade began when I found Paramount's release of Godzilla's Revenge in a local Goodwill store. I came to the conclusion that every Thrift Store must have at least ONE Godzilla video tape. A new Thrift Store opened nearby, last month. I decided to test my theory. I was incredibly happy to find atleast one, among the hundreds of tapes they had, Godzilla video. It was the infamous "Zina" release of "Godzilla vs. the Cosmic Monster". Idk if its worth anything,(Some old VHS's become collectible)but it seems quite rare. Now I'm on the hunt for a Godzilla vs. Megalon.

Anyone else hunt through Thrift Stores?

Not a thrift store exactly, but I got my old Anchor Bay Gigan/Mechagodzilla set from a flea market a long time ago.

I've gone to a thrift store that didn't have a Godzilla movie. Granted it was pretty small.

I generally don't get Godzilla movies on VHS, because of how VHS tapes fade away easily. So even if I saw a Godzilla movie on VHS I probably wouldn't get it unless that version of the film (like the AIP edit of Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster) is not available on DVD.

You are very fortunate SD. I have not seen a Godzilla VHS in YEARS at a thrift store, most of the ones in my area were picked clean a long time ago. Fortunately I pretty much picked up every Godzilla film on VHS years ago when they were new, or when mom & pop video stores were closing after Blockbuster & Hollywood took over the rental market. I have them all as collecters items, asstated above the quality fades over time, but I also used them to source DVDR's of dubs that are no longer used.

I would suggest looking online such as eBay & amazon. You can still get used VHS of most Godzilla/Toho films pretty cheap if you are patient & look around. It beast wasting gas going to thrift stores on a wild goose chase usually for nothing.

Ordering online isn;t as fun!

But in anycase, I;m not buying these videos to watch, I already own all the Godzilla films on various DVDs. I just want them for pure nostalgic, and collectable value.

You're pretty late to be looking for pawnshop treasure. I haven't seen a Godzilla film in a thrift store/flea market/pawn shop in many, many years. But kudos, have fun hunting, and Godspeed.

Also, eBay is your best source for Godzilla VHS(s). If eBay existed when I was a kid, I'd have never spent so many hours looking aimlessly for old tapes.

Thrift stores were my salvation as a kid. I got so many old beat up VHSs from them, especially Godzilla. Ahh, memories.

Same here as well. I own dozens upon dozens on VHS, collected both before and after the advent of DVD. I like them as collectibles, I don't even really watch them anymore. And thrift stores, flea markets, and antique malls are great places to look for that type of stuff. The other day at the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall a seller has a copy of HBO's Godzilla vs. Biollante and Gigan and Mechagodzilla by Starmaker. Of course I'd already had those for years. But I'm still finding Godzilla videos at thrift stores, and not just the 1998 film. unfortunately most I come across I already own.

If I were you I would've boguht them For one thing Godzilla vs. Biollante can go for 30 dollars on Ebay for the VHS. for another, to save them. You have no idea what kind of hands those relics might fall into, or what may become of them should they not sell. I would buy them for the sake of keeping them safe.

CD Warehouse used to have Godzilla and Gamera VHSs galore. Sadly theyve all closed here.

I gave all my Godzilla VHSs to a church's thrift shop. Went back to get my Gamera vs Guiron Sandy Frank VHS and it was already gone.

What would be fun to find is Godzilla on Beta Max

I've loved scavenging thrift stores and pawn shops and garage sales for goodies like this for years. Here in the Chicago suburbs places like the Goodwill store, Salvation Army and Savers are popping up all over the place. I love finding little treasures like, especially books and CDs and even DVDs sometimes.

Godzilla movies on Laserdisc seem more interesting to me, personally.

Though I don't have a Laserdisc player :|

I still scour thrift stores every now and then for monster/Toho films. I've found some pretty rare stuff over the years, so I guess I've had better luck than some people. Granted, it's been a few years since I've found anything worth mentioning.

Regarding Godzilla on Beta, I know that GHIDRAH once had a Beta Max release. Also, GODZILLA 1985.

skreeonk! My post was deleted again! There's something wrong with the forum...

I said that I wanted Godzilla movies on Laserdisc, even though I don't have a Laserdisc player.

EDIT: Nevermind. My post reappeared. Too bad I don't know how to delete posts...

It's always a surprise to find some sort of Godzilla related merch somewhere no matter how haggard it may be.

I kinda wish I had more official Godzilla VHS releases. Most of my collection was recorded from Monstervision and Scifi channel airings. When I was younger I wasn't interested in collecting movies, and by the time I was interested VHS faded away. I don't think I will buy any now though since I already have DVDs and now Blu-rays.

Well, if you really want 'em, they're all over eBay, most of them probably very cheap. There are a fair amount of sellers offering them in lots at great prices. If you want them, go for it.

I check pretty much every store, thrift or otherwise. The thrift store only had the '98 movie.
