Godzilla's heart in GMK

Postby Tyler » Sat Aug 13, 2011 8:02 pm

Let's settle this once and for all. Did Godzilla die at the end of GMK, despite his heart beating after his body self destructing?

Well, it's obvious to me that it's meant to be seen two different ways. One is that Godzilla as a character will never go away. But at the second time in the context of the film Godzilla will always return when Japan forgets about the past and stuff like that. Now even if you didn't like that aspect of the film ignoring what was intended and saying the heart stopped beating when the credits began rolling is still missing the point.

Argue!

Ill start this out since i feel quite strongly about it. I believe Godzilla's heart remained beating after the credits started rolling and will continue beating until he regenerates his entire body in another 50 years or so. Thats how Godzilla came back in the first place. After he was killed by the oxygen destroyer in his first attack, a small part of Godzilla remained and started regenerating rather slowly, until he was fully reborn in 2001. He was then posessed by the souls of World War 2 which chanelled his destructive rage and turned him into the sadistic creature he was. The same thing will happen with the heart. Godzilla will return once more and wreak havoc. If the souls leave him, then he will simply regenrate and resurface in Tokyo, cause some destruction, and leave.

I agree. It's totally illogical but then again this is a giant monster movie with mystical monsters and characters to boot. It wouldn't be the first time a Toho movie contradicted itself, but the old man was very adamant that Godzilla could not be killed with any weapons. Excepting the original film, Godzilla really isn't meant to be beaten by man. But as a final note, unless someone at Toho actually says so, we'll never be able to finalize it, just get a more well accepted theory (same thing as the issues the Heisei Ghidorah brought about).

The word regeneration should be excised from any discussions on GMK. Godzilla is still alive not because he has an ability to heal its wounds, but because of the supernatural forces behind his lifeforce. Saying GMK Godzilla regenerates is nearly as ridiculous as saying Freddy Krueger regenerates.
Every film should have at least one animal attack.

Well how about rebirth then? Thats more or less what happens to GMK Godzilla over the 50 years he grows back to his former self, and what will likely happen continually until someone figures out a new strategy of getting rid of him.

He didn't do that. The souls of thousands upon thousands of dead, angry soldiers did.

To me, Godzilla's heart beating at the end of the film is saying that the character of Godzilla will live on forever. It doesn't necessarily mean that Godzilla will be coming back any time soon. But, if he were coming back, then it wouldn't be because any of his abilities, but due to the souls that revived him in the first place.

He died in GMK, but his legacy is eternal.

Honestly, I said it on the Deadliest Monster thread too, but without a brain and other organs to provide other bodily functions, regeneration is impossible.

Godzilla is alive. I don;t see what's so damn unbelievable about it anyway. He was reduced to particles in Gojira, what is being stripped down to a still-beating heart? Since the Japanese haven't learnt their leasson, Godzilla will remain.

GMK is a commentary on Japan's habit of forgetting that WWII and their war crimes happened. The Souls are angry because they were forgotten.

You seem to be missing that point that Godzilla never resurrected himself.

He resurrected himself and then was posessed by the souls of WWII. Even if you look at it as the souls resurrected him, it still means that hell be back again.

Sigh. No. Its explicitly stated that the Souls brought back Godzilla. He never did it consciously. And yes, he did come back. But its also inferred that he won't come back because I think Japan learned their lesson.

If Godzilla is the rage of the Pacific Theatre all rolled into one beast, as long as the world honors and respects their memories, he should be pacified.

This isn't just nuclear dinosaur Godzilla, this one's cut from a slightly different stock. He's a supernatural being as well, he's a walking collection of enraged spirits from across the pacific. Meaning, Japanese, Americans, Chinese, Australians, Bhurmese, Filipinos, etc. As long as Japan doesn't try to pretend 1937-1945 never happened, Godzilla will remain passive, should they forget again he'll return.

Which entails to me, Godzilla's beating heart signifies that the past shouldn't be forgotten just because it's over, but rather it looms over them. Godzilla's heart means Godzilla may one day return, and is for all intents and purposes inescapable. Much like the War Japan may like to think, never happened, or wasn't their fault.

^ This. The heart means that Godzilla will probably return, if the japanese forget. And im not saying that he conciously resurrected himself, only that his body regenerated over time.

So GMK's Godzilla theme song should have been this:

Besides being a serious "OHSHIT!" moment in a literal sense, there are at least two symbolic meaning. One is that if the people of Japan didn't learn their lesson the first time, the big guy would be back in all his wrathful glory. The other is that the character himself would never die.

As for if Godzilla is still alive and able to regenerate? Who cares! It wasn't meant to set up a sequel, it was just to bring the story back in a full loop.
