Talkback: Godzilla 2000 Millennium (1999)

Ill admit, when first saw it yea it was Nostalgia towrads it. But i still enjoy watching it even on regualr dvd without Nostalgia memories. Now i agree its not on par with say Gojira'54 or Godzilla'84 but i still think its a step up than majority of the Millienium series. Hell i sort of even liked it better than GMK lol

I was already 15 by the time this hit theaters, and at the time, I was less than impressed. I've come to appreciate the film over time, and definitely don't think it's bad..but I feel like a lot of younger fans tend to let their memories of seeing this in a theater color their opinion of how "good" they thing the film is. Obviously, that's okay; I do the same thing with the 70's films.

I've just noticed that older fans tend to be pretty "meh" about the film, while those who experienced it in the theater tend to have it as one of their favorites. There are (obviously) exceptions to this rule. It's just something I noticed over the years.

Well, I never got to see it in the theater sadly, only on TV and later on DVD. (I was 4 when it came out.) I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I just really think that this movie is great, I could never get over Orga trying to swallow Godzilla.

When I first watched this movie, I really enjoyed it as a kid. When I was in 6th grade, this was one of my favorite Godzilla movies, and I thought it was kind of like a reboot that anyone could like. I sort of thought of it as the Batman Begins of Godzilla.

Years later I decided to watch it. I felt quite disappointed. This movie was rushed, and you can tell. A lot of the effects after the opening scene of Godzilla look incredibly poor. The orga suit (and the final fight) look really poor.

I might need to give this a re-watch sometime, but this movie is far from a masterpiece. The only Godzilla movie I would dare call a "masterpiece" is Gojira.

Godzilla 2000 is the Stereotypical Godzilla film. by which I mean, it sums up the entire franchise as a whole and does a damn good job at it.
It combines all 3 characteristics of all 3 series and can be fit into any of each's continuity.

What I find interesting abut it is how striking it looks compared to the other Millenium Godzilla films. It looks older than it is, in the way its shot and on what film they used. It's brilliant.

Furthermore, people often mistake Final Wars as a throwback to the Showa era. They are wrong. Just because the monsters do stupid things and there's alot of them, doesn't make it more like a Showa film. If anything, Final Wars is a huge step back, rather than a step forward. Godzilla 2000 however matches the plot structure and visual style of a 60's Godzilla film to the T. It's perfect. Godzilla is also most similar in attitude to that Godzilla. Also in terms of music. Everything about that film is Showa. Godzilla 2000, like the Showa films, also wrks as a film you can jump right into. With the Heisei series, and all the Millenium films, they rely on back story and previous films' continuities. Godzilla 2000 doesn't need any exposition or previous viewing, much like a Showa film. It's just a straight forward, old fashioned, Godzilla film. It's a PERFECT throwback. One little thing I love, is like in the 70's films, you get that hyper close up shot of character's squinting to flashing light.

It's a perfect Godzilla film and it defines the entire franchise in a nutshell.
I only wish it was called Godzilla vs. Orga, like I call it, instead of Godzilla 2000, because 2000 dates it.

Donkun pretty much just summed up lot of things i thought about G2K once i watched it over and over on dvd instead of when i was young and dealing with Nostalgia.

I was bored shitless by this film when I saw it theatrically over here. It did absolutely nothing for me and I only went to see it once in the theater. To this day I think I've maybe seen it all the way through twice. It sits in my bottom five, easily and that's probably where it's always going to be.

Personally I can't understand how such a weak, ho-hum type of film could top anyone's list of favorite Godzilla movies...unless the nostalgia of seeing it in a theater really means that much. There are just so many other more interesting Godzilla movies from all three eras.

I've always found the excessive gadgetry of Tezuka's Millennium films to be off-putting, which is why I find the stripped down GMK to be more appealing. G2K has grown on me for this reason, and it even gets points over GMK for just being a simple and modern Godzilla film without Kaneko's personal preference for mysticism (which I personally am not a huge fan of).

It's to bad this approach wasn't taken more often; the Kiryu films feel like toy commercials at times.

I experienced it in the theaters back in 2000 with my dad and my friends, I think it's a fun film but it's not my personal favorite Godzilla film. I personally enjoy the US cut over the Japanese version which is rare to me. I never knew why they pick a cartoony font for "The End?" ? I did find the movie better then GvsKG and GvsSG IMO.

This is probably my least favorite Millennium film, which is a shame because it's so straight forward and well crafted.

This Movie its awesome, i still remember when i first entered the cinema to watch this movie i was all shaking and excited and it didnt it was a blast seeing a Godzilla in the big screen; Great Times
and about The End? Credit... funny as always.

Nostalgia is certainly a factor in my appreciation for this movie, but not entirely. I feel just as much (if not more) nostalgia for pretty much all the Showa/Heisei films that I watched endlessly as a kid, yet I still prefer Godzilla 2000 over most of them (for reasons I pointed out in my first post).

I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece, but for once I actually agree with Donkun. G2K has pretty much everything I love about Godzilla and really epitomizes the entire series.

Yup. It's not not all that high on my list, but it really is a solid picture, and hits just about every base you'd expect in an archetypal "Godzilla versus..." type story.

It has pacing issues and bad CGI but I only occasionally hear many critiques of it otherwise. Wasn't this only the second or third time Toho even used CGI in a Godzilla film? I don't blame them if it's mediocre here. As for pacing, most of the '90s films had the same issue.

My appreciation for Godzilla 2000 has grown over the years. I think the lackluster Tokyo S.O.S and Final Wars helped give me a new found respect for Godzilla 2000. Not to mention that it was my first and only Japanese Godzilla film that I've seen in theaters. So, while it may not be a masterpiece it is one of the better millenium films IMO.

I would also like to point out the G2K has the most human and developed in the Millenium and Heisei series combined. It also has the best human villainin those two series combined. And is the most quotable.I

I would also like to point out it has scenes devoted to comedy, such as the scene where the guy keeps getting hit by the2x4. Scenes like these haven't been seen since the Showa series.
