What Do You Expect?

Postby GORIZARD2 » Sat Aug 06, 2011 11:43 pm

There's alot to expect from the film but here's my top 10 of what I expect or wish to see in the film. Please include your expectations.

1.) OK, what I expect is an American Hollywood version of Godzilla that's (almost) in the same style as the original Godzilla films. Not exactly imitate them, but pay homage to them. Much like JJ Abrams paid homage to the original Star Trek with his remake. With that film, you knew it was a new version but it still paid homage and respect to the original show.

2.) I don't want Godzilla to attack New York City. NYC has been done to death. He should attack the west coast. Just somewhere that hasn't been done before in American monster films.

3.) Brian Rogers confirmed that Godzilla will fight several monsters. I want them to narrow it from 2 to 3. And Godzilla should fight brand new monsters. I'm really sick of Toho updating the classic monsters like King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, and Mothra and adding them in the new films.
I want Godzilla to take on new challenges. Not the same monsters over and over again. I also wouldn't mind if Legendary used some of the scrapped monsters like Bagan or The Gryphon. But I really want to see fresh new monsters. It's about time Godzilla got a new enemy instead of an old-but-updated one. But if they do add classic Toho monsters (which is unlikely), I wanna see King Ghidorah and Gigan.

4.) The film should be dark and gritty. OK, I know Brian Rogers promised a Batman Begins style version of Godzilla (which coincidentally is being written by the Batman Begins writer) but will they really pull through with that? They should take Godzilla back to the dark roots of the original film but in a modern setting. Hopefully David S. Goyer achieves that.

5.) Godzilla's design should be bad ass! It should look very distinctive but new at the same time. Much like the Godzilla 2000 design. It had the traditional Godzilla-look but it was updated. They should do the same, take the traditional look but make it look newer.

6.) Godzilla's Theme MUST be included in the film! If it not then at least in the ending credits. They shouldn't take the theme from an old Godzilla soundtrack. They should do a rearrangement. I wouldn't mind a new theme (like in G2K or GMK) but I prefer they stick with Godzilla's theme instead of a new one. And Michael Giacchino or Craig Armstrong should compose the score.

7.) There should be a sense of tragedy. Like a national crisis with Godzilla's attack. I hope I don't get panned for this but think of 9/11 but with Godzilla. Hear me out: the U.S. is in the middle of a national financial crisis, the job market is slowly declining, people are getting kicked out of their homes, the Government is doing more bad than good, and on top of that, a giant monster just comes out of the sea and starts ravaging the country.
The characters in the film should be convincing and relatable. Also, we should care about them and Godzilla.

8.) I know they've done this a million times before but it's tradition: the military should fight Godzilla. Now I want them to engage the Big G in the city. Not at a beach or a forest, in the city! Where we'll see a lot of damage and explosions. And what does that equal? ACTION!...oh yeah, and Godzilla should wipe them out with his atomic breath.

9.) Speaking of action, I want there to be real action in the film. Gareth Edwards' (the director) previous film Monsters had no action at all! I don't want this to be like Legendary's other film Superman Returns where there was more talking and character development (which is good) and less action.
If they don't add action, they'll lose their audience. But there has to be action, come on, it's Godzilla! But here's what is Godzilla action...
obviously monsters fighting in the middle of a metropolitan city, Godzilla smashing and burning buildings, battling the military, and... I guess that's it?

10.) Last but not least, a good movie!
I don't just want a good Godzilla movie, I want a good movie in general. It should work as a movie and a Godzilla movie. The previous 1998 film failed at that. Gareth Edwards should deliver a movie that is pleasing to us fans and to non-fans alike. This should make the West respect Godzilla and discover what he's really all about instead of stupid stereotypes like "Run, it's Godzillaaaa!!!" or people pointing out men-in-suits destroying a cardboard city.
This should be a success with fans, audiences, and critics. Godzilla must deliver!

What do you think? What do you expect? What do you want from the reboot?

1)Godzilla destroying buildings and blowing away tanks instead of ''saving the day'' immediatly.

2)Some references to the previous movies.

3)No rap or hard rock music.

4)No sexual or ethnic jokes a la Transformers.

5)The movie must be enjoyed by the general audience, not only the Godzilla fans and it must receive good opinions by critics.

6)I don't want very powerful foes like Ghidorah to be already in the first movie.

7)I'd like to see an original monster as a foe.

8)No dumb human characters.

9)No Reagan-type of villains(foreign villain with the personality and traits of a sterotypical comic book character) like Tokyovigilante and Evan have suggested.

10)A Batman Begins type of atmosphere would be nice.(not orange all over the place please.)

11)Godzilla who looks and acts like Godzilla.

^ I agree with pretty much all of those.

I expect taht the tone for the movie is going to be the hardets part to work with. You gotta find that nice niche between believable camp and dark storytelling. Again, somethingalong the lines of Iron Man or Star Trek would be nice.

1. I want Godzilla to be recognizable as the character we all know and love, both in behavior and appearance.

2. I want the movie to take this admittedly fantastic genre seriously. I am so damn sick of every summer blockbuster being packed with one-liners and winks at the camera. I feel like kissing the suits at 20th Century Fox for letting Rise of the Planet of the Apes come out as an honest-to-god, fully committed, serious, thoughtful sci-fi movie. I hope Godzilla can achieve a similar tone, without skimping on the action.

I'll be honest with you guys. I'm a little scared of this movie. I'm just like that, especially when this has been done before, with not much success. But, anyway, I agree with basically everything above, with an extra nod going to those who spoke out against forced humor. That could kill it for me. I want to be sitting on the edge of my seat almost the entire time, not sitting back in it going, "That wasn't funny" or some shit like that.
But, as scared as I am, I also can't wait for it to come out. :D

1) A movie that isn't too dark (cuz that sh*t can get annoying. Specially when a movie is only liked for it being dark). Show off Godzilla's reign of terror and how everyone/everything around him is in ruins. But don't make this into a movie where we're supposed to laugh at people dieing, see every person on the street as scum that deserved death, or have a main character that's utterly useless besides whining and angsting about mankind ... Ok, I doubt they would go this far. But it gets annoying seeing people overrate darkness.

2) A movie that isn't too light and cheesy. Look at Godzilla 2000! I prefer the english version over japanese, but wow! The voices were horrible! The story was cheesed up! And that was done on purpose! Luckily, this is likely to not happen.

3) Human drama should not overshadow the monsters unless the human drama itself is reasonably based around them. Like Politicians or military leaders stressed with what to do, people needing help after a monster attack, etc. Nothing like GvM (divorced couple taking up many scenes) or GINO (annoying couple getting back together). Human drama can work out in a monster film, but don't make it into something that feels like it's pushing the monsters away.

4) I would prefer a new, original monster to face Godzilla. I don't care if it's a big or small role. We need a new monster that can be liked by more people. But if Godzilla is to face two other monsters, then I would prefer the main foe to be a classic Toho creation, and the lesser one to be new.

5) I expect Godzilla to take on military attacks like a man. Not like his last American counterpart ... Sure, it's more realistic. But that's not what Godzilla is supposed to be about.

6) No rap or metal music.

And as a plus, I agree with mostly everything everyone else is saying. But I truly don't mind how this movie turns out. Even if it is against everything I listed. As long as the movie is good, I'm fine.

I forgot the part about the music. I would like/prefer that it be an orchestral piece, as most have said. No heavy shit, and no Rap (I hate rap anyway). That stuff just seems out of place in a movie like that.

Google "Godzilla 2012 Brian Rogers", and a video interview where he confirmed this, should be the first thing to pop up. He says he will fight an "other monster, or monsters".

I like both of these.

I don't really disagree strongly with any of what gorizard said, either, but a lot of those go beyond my minimal hopes and expectations for a good new American Godzilla.

...That hardly implies Godzilla will fight SEVERAL monsters.

-As for the topic question, what do I want out of the film? As many others have already mentioned, I want the film to be a good homage to the Godzilla series but to still deliver some sense of independent thought and creativity, specifically to keep it more "modern," but in a good way. Think Batman Begins.

-The first segment of the movie should be about Godzilla's path of destruction, breaking buildings, attacking army etc. I would prefer that he's already established a la Godzilla 2000 so we don't have to waste time with a quarter of the film dedicated to his entrance.

-I also want him to fight two monsters, the first being the token cannon fodder monster that still puts up a good fight just to show how strong Godzilla is, then to have the final monster be some sort of "ultimate" monster that only Godzilla can beat, illustrating the "defender of the universe" character while still being a destructive asshole and not some sort of gigantic superhero. Seeing as Godzilla's going to be a "dark" film, this cruel sense of irony is fitting.

-Also speaking of the film being dark, please have some humor.
-Give me a "WOW" moment. Something that amazes the audience to the point that everybody in the theater speaks up. To reference the Nolan Batman films again, think of the scene where Batman flips over the 18 wheeler with his bike, but on a more monstrous scale.

Then there's obvious stuff like having a good score with Godzilla's theme, good human characters when monsters aren't on screen, and please don't make it a braindead popcorn flick like the Transformers films. Now what do I expect? I expect Edwards to pay proper homage to Godzilla but still make the same technical mistakes he made in Monsters and I expect the writing to be rubbish because Goyer is not a great writer on his own. These issues, matched with subpar acting, will probably land Godzilla no higher than 60% on rotten tomatoes, and that's being generous.

I don't expect anything, yet. It's still far too early into this films development for me to speculate.

1) Excellent monster designs. I don't care who he fights, just as long as they look good. He could fight Gezora for all I care.
2) Good acting. Seems simple for LP to follow this, but it is a Sci-Fi movie...
3) Godzilla being the central character. I don't wanna know how so-and-so feels about this or that, just focus on what the movie is called: Godzilla.

My thoughts, from another thread:

Exactly. We'll get a Japanese-style Godzilla (who looks like him, has atomic breath and is immune to most weapondry) in full CGI facing off a monster...the story could be nothing but the characters farting, and it would still be a better movie than GINO.
