As much as a pretentious knowitall as I probably come off as sometimes, I enjoy all Godzilla films on account of being Godzilla films and Final Wars makes me positively giddy. I always have gotten a kick out of that movie.

You think it has any redeeming qualities?

I don't like it as a whole (too rambling, too much pointless human bullshit), but I might give it a 4/10 for some of the monster action (and a bit of the humans versus Xilians stuff). I guess I can enjoy it in a limited way as an ensemble action film, of which Godzilla is only a minor part. Still, in his 50th anniversary film, that's a fairly insulting approach.

But then there's Gordon, whose sheer awesome power transcends the film around him.

No. I skreeonk hate that movie with a passion. It's complete and utter garbage. Whiskey actually makes the viewing experience worse, believe it or not.

The monster action isn't well staged, and there isn't nearly enough of it. I can't stand any of the scenes with the "actors", save for the appearance's of Takarada-san, Sahara-san, and Mrs. Mizuno. The first time I watched GFW was probably the most disappointing experience I've ever had with a new film. Right there next to the first time I saw GODZILLA '98 and ALIENS VS. PREDATOR.

Sure, I was happy to see all of the old monsters return..but if you blinked, you missed them all anyway.

The first time I watched GFW was probably the most disappointing experience I've ever had with a new film.

I freely admit that my initial reaction was identical to yours. It took several years of distance before I was willing to reconsider the picture a little bit.

I watched Final Wars for the first time this year, so the whole 50 year anniversary hype wasn't there at all. I was expecting a bad movie, but I figured it would at least be entertaining. Nope. Hated it, save for a few elements. I really wanted to like it, but just couldn't.
