That review has an interesting quote : "The picture is strong fare for the art houses but of little value generally". Taken at face value, one could see truth in this. But when the time time and setting was changed to something relatable to an American audience, the "value" expanded far beyond the art houses and into to the general audiences.

I do not recall any film titles or dubbing clips from "The Magnificent Seven" version of Seven Samurai known to be available.

Resized Image

Plus BoxOffice's review (Jan. 5, 1957) here.
I didn't know that Seven Samurai was called The Magnificent Seven in English before the U.S. film The Magnificent Seven was ever even conceived, let alone made.

Boy, you learn something new every day, don't you?

Can anyone imagine if Kurosawa actually directed a sequel to this movie? This movie's American remake, The Magnificent Seven got one back in the day, so it's not a stretch to hypothesize such an idea.

If so, what actors would've taken the places of the ones slain in the first film? I'm guessing Akira Takarada, Kenji Sahara, Akihito Hirata and Akira Kubo. As for the villain, I imagine Jun Tazaki would've played the Lorca stand-in.

Update. Seeing this in the theater in 4k was AM AZ ING. Like WOW, I can't even describe what an awesome experience it was. Also it was kinda funny to do the intermissions but I do love recreating authenticity with these older screenings...and lets be real... it's needed, I ran to that bathroom haha. But yea the quality looks great, is there any word of it coming on physical?

The original US dub (minus The Magnificent Seven title card) has been found, a few clips of it are available on YT:

Actually, The Magnificent Seven got three sequels. They were:

*Return of the Seven (1966),
*Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969),
*The Magnificent Seven Ride! (1972).

As you may have guessed, none of them were as successful as the original.

Ikiru is also receiving a 4K BFI release a month prior: https://shop.bfi.org.uk/ikiru-2-disc-blu-ray.html

Seven Samurai has a 4K and a non-4K release, both sourced from the same 4K remaster (and presumably using the same
masters used for their corresponding Toho releases last year). The 4K is £5 more.
