Monster Discussion #52: SpaceGodzilla

For being in such a bad movie, he's a pretty sweet villain. The idea of Godzilla having an evil twin is cool, his powers are interesting, and he actually gives off a distinctively wicked vibe. There a few shot where he cries right into the camera that just SCREAM 'I'm here to kill you, your son, and your world, and there no way you can stop me'.

The concept of an evil twin to Godzilla is simply awesome, and would've been great to see on film; unfortuantly, all we got was wasted potential. Terrible execution is to blame, but not as bad as Mothra or Rodan fortuantly. His movement is limited drastically, as he takes beam wars to the extreme by standing there protected by potruding crystals and refecter shields as "cover" for most of his scenes when he's not being pulled along in a shoddy styrofoam asteroid belt. Not once to my knowledge does he even MOVE! All he does is let other creatures get close to him and then lets lose with a corona beam barrage or tail impalement. His character however is one of his only saving graces. He proves to actually be a true villain that knows Godzilla pretty well (because he IS made from the same cells as him), which leads him to kidnap Little One so he can confront Godzilla and ultimately kill him. Did Ghidorah ever think of something like that? Hedorah? Destoroyah? Gabara? Not to mention his design is good, however his crystals are klunky and bulging and in some shots IMO his face looks wierd.
Overall, Spacegodzilla is just one of the many disappointments found in much of the Heisei series. He could've been the new archenemy of Godzilla, but sadly, poor execution kills it.

Spacegodzilla suffered from poor acting and horrible effects. I actually like the Kaiju myself also and thought the inital idea of the plot interesting for the most part.

It's an impressive feat when you take Godzilla, give him a stupid color scheme and attach dumb looking tacky doodads all over him and still manage to make him boring.

Spacegodzilla is only interesting as far as the most bare-bones concept; "Godzilla from Space". Every step after that into the creation of this waste of a character is just one fumble after another.

Way back when I was heavily into the "Fan Kaiju" scene, there would be lots of creations like "Icezilla", "Firezilla", "Wingedzilla", "Blackzilla" etc. that would just be MS paint edited images of Godzilla. That is all Spacegodzilla is, except they made a movie out of one of them.

When I first saw Spacegodzilla back in 2000 (when I got Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla) I thought, "Wait a minute. Is that Super Godzilla but with crystals?" That was my first reaction when I first saw him. Pretty cool idea for a monster but terrible execution

I thought the idea was poor, too. SpaceGodzilla? Dumb name, dumb concept..like TokyoVigilante said, seems like a fan-made kaiju. His roar sucks, too.

Would have rather gotten the monster they borrowed the design from, Super Godzilla. At least his origin is more beliveable. Godzilla fused with King Ghidorah cells and given huge amounts of radiation thus resulting him mutating into a super monster? Makes sense to me.

Spacegodzilla being made by either a piece of Biollante or G-cells falling off of Mothra and into a black hole, fusing with some crystal alien life form, being exposed to exploding stars and then falling out of a "white hole" and somehow knowing where Earth and Godzilla are and all of this happening is less then 10 years? No, just....no.

If there is one thing I will admit is cool it's the beam looking like it has a "mind" of it's own. Easily one of the coolest. It's just sad it's probably one of the few things about him that is original.

It's funny you made that comparison because his ridiculous origin feels like it would be more at home in the late Showa films then it does the Heisei films even when taking in accont that Mothra and Batrra are some kind of gods and Biollante somehow has the soul of one of it's dead genetic "parents".

SpaceGodzilla was cool. But then again, I'm one of the few that likes the film, flaws and all. Biollante through Destroyah was what I watched the most when I was younger, so I guess I tend to be partial to the whole Heisei series, SpaceGodzilla included.

but i like it. the idea of a Space Telekinetic Clone sounds Awesome, i like his design and roar...
(even though is an altered Gigan Roar) but it couldve been better.

SpaceGodzilla is one of the most powerful and evil villains in the franchise. I liked the monster and its design.

Meh, SpaceGodzilla.... I think it shows how mediocre a Godzilla film is when even the titular monsters are boring. His concept was interesting to say the very least. I liked his Corona Beam weapon, but that's just about it.

That's all I really have to say about him. He's my least favorite monster from my least favorite Godzilla movie.
