A very weird mobile suit with a surprising name

Postby alienhulk2099 » Thu Aug 12, 2010 4:42 pm

From Mobile Suit Variations X in 84 after digging around the variation parts of MAHQ to see how the Zudah from MS Igloo jumped from EMS-4 to 10 I found this:

The mobile suit may look strange, but the reason I made a topic on it was it's name:

Yeah, you read that correctly, Bandai got away with naming one of their creations Gigan. August, KPA, Avery, does Toho even know of this thing's existence and if so was there a law suit on it? Because if not I think we found the world record for "longest copyright infringement gone unnoticed". The paint job isn't too different from Gigan's regular color scheme come to think of it. :?

It reminds me waaay more of Moguera than Gigan but eh, Toho has been known to get pretty pissy about people taking their copyrights. Maybe Bandai had a deal done with Toho?

Don't try to be something else. Don't try to be less. Great things are going to happen in your life. Great things. And with that will come great responsibility.

Isn't Gigan japanese for "one-eye" or something? It's only got one "eye", hence the name probably.

Good point. It doesn't mean anything to US, but to the japanese it could be analogous to calling something "Reptile".

Even if "one-eye" is the meaning for Gigan it is still a copyrighted name by Toho, if this was never seen by Toho they could still be breaking the law

It's like copyrighting the word "dog". You can't use the character's design, but of course you can use the name.

Precisely! It why so many companies use misspelled names for things. The misspelled version is copyrightable.

I'm surprised IR hasn't done a snappy one liner by now since he is one of the local Gundam fans. :?

You said the exact same thing in your other Gundam-related thread.

That snappy enough for you?

I've known about this thing for a couple years.

Yep, that'll do.

You know, these variations were released in 1984, maybe it was some sort of subliminal advertisement to get people to see Return of Godzilla and a conspiracy theory with Toho at the helm? *shrugs*

It's worth noting that THIS thing was what was supposed to kill the Gundam at A Baoa Qu at the end of MSG, had the show ran to its original 52-episode length.

.....yeeeeah, can't say I would've liked that either...

Gigan, in Japanese, loosely translates to "artificial eye".

I've seen characters called Gigan before.

And I have the oddest feeling Toho has copyright to Gigan in terms of character, not name.

Toho doesnt own a sauropod, ya know.
