Two of them are in circulation, Godzilla (98) and Gojira (from Classic Media).

The other two haven't got a release date for them (yet). They are Godzilla vs Megalon, (recently confirmed to be coming out soon if I'm not mistaken) and
Drum rolll..... Godzilla vs Biollante .

So it appears that well be getting GvsBio before ROG. Which is fine with me cause its my favourite. But I still vote ROG.

And that's us Americans and Canadians set to get that? I guess so since it says United States. What about Destroy All Monsters?

Still RoG/G85, for the reasons already stated by many others.

If you count the international version since it is missing all of the annoying Japanese subtitles, then ROG has three unique versions.

I don't really find them that annoying. Hardly even distracting, really.

They're just unnecessary to English viewers, and they're in abundance in GOJIRA 84', so I can understand where Tamura is coming from.

I would be fine if the ROG release used a touched up (in HD, ala the Sony disks) International print (with English and Japanese audio options, of courese), and then had the Monsters HD version of GODZILLA 1985 (on a second disk) that was matched up to be like the original theatrical/home video release. Now that would be mighty nice..I wouldn't even care about special features at that point. This was my first ever G film, and frankly, I expected it on DVD like 12 years ago.

Does anyone know if the subs seen on the R3 (and other European versions) disk of RETURN uses Toho's "official" subtitle track for the film? I figure it might be impossible to know, unless August/Keith have ever seen a 35 mm screening of Toho's subtitled print.

Does the international version have anything different then G85 then the removal of the subs? If not, its not really another version. If adding or removing subs gave a film another "unique" version, then every movie made that has subs would have another 'unique' version.

Toho's international version was the first version to use the infamous Godzilla "scream" as he falls into the volcano. It's strangely absent from Japanese version. There are also a few other small, very subtle differences. Specifically in the sound department.

We've already established RoG and G85 are different versions of the film. I know Ive heard the scream on G85, so that doesnt make the international unique.

^My theory is that a Japanese mono mix exists, and that is what the mono US and International dubs are based on. The international dubs have never remixed any sound effects. Plus, I know a person who saw the Japanese version on 16mm (remember, 16mm can only be in mono) and it had the scream.

I consider the ridiculous quantity of subs in the Japanese version to be enough for it to be an entirely different version.

M'kay. I didn't mention G 85' in the first place.

The scream doesn't exist on the home video versions. So either your memory of your theatrical experience is hazy (and incorrect), or it exists in some obscure theatrical version that you saw.

I have a bootleg of the New World VHS release and I JUST watched that scene like < 15 seconds ago. It has the Godzilla scream. I also saw it in theatres in 85 and it had the scream.

Ugh, you know what, my bad. I was thinking about it all wrong. (Out of coffee at the moment..) The scream IS in GODZILLA 1985 (and the international version). It just doesn't exist in the original Japanese version..though like Tamura said, a fan (or two) on another forum has said they saw a 16mm print of the film that had the scream in tact.

I need to rewatched RoG, since been awhile. Im extremely happy with my VHS rip of G85 but I would SO but it legit on DVD or BRD. Id buy it even if it wasnt a RoG/G85 two pack.

Well, my HK RoG doesn't have the scream. Always bummed out about that; I think it really makes or breaks the ending. I've seen some people have no real vested interest throughout the movie, but when that scream comes and the music and reactions from the characters...those people just get it and I can watch it click in their head. Godzilla died, and they cared. Not everyone, mind you, but a lot of the people I've watched it with over the years.

Also, I gotta go with a 2-disk of RoG. I'm really quite surprised that some of the more ambitious DVD release companies, Tokyo Shock I'm looking at you, haven't been spending time trying to work out the mess with its rights. I mean, purely from a business standpoint, it got state-side theatrical release with a sizable campaign, so it would follow that there are a number of people who would recognize it sitting on a shelf. It would inherently sell more copies here than Biollante, or even logically, most any other G film that never got a theatrical run. Plus, it is, in my opinion, very American filmatically (thanks Vern).

Just a real no brainer for boutique type release companies.

MB/Tokyo Shock is not a bad company, but their past Toho releases haven't necessarily been that ambitious. All but one are subtitled R2s with a dub.

^God no, I didn't mean to imply that I think they're a bad company. I have virtually all of their Takashi Miike releases as well as the Tohos'. I think they're stellar, but this definitely seems in their wheel house. I don't know all the behind the scenes stuff, so I refuse to comment on that, but I'm sure they've tried and couldn't for some reason. But what about, say, Discotheque(sp?)? Are they still around? Is Tartan?

And again, having said what I said about its higher than normal visibility here in the States, I'm even more surprised no one worked it out in 98...

Concerning the "scream"... Star Child/King Records released a 2LP stereo drama-record (basically just the audio to the Japanese version of the film) in 1985 which contains the scream.

New World also slightly rearranged the timing of the scream to when Godzilla is halfway down the volcano.
