LEGO Franchise to continue at Universal.
I’m posting this here because the LEGO Movie came out the same year as Godzilla 2014, both were major blockbusters from WB that were supposed to kickstart franchises.
They both didn’t receive a sequel until 5 years later this very year, and both also had spin offs in between (Kong: Skull Island and LEGO Batman). The sequels suffered considerably at the box office with many analysts pointing to the 5 year gap among other things for each one (the LEGO Movie 2 not being as funny and the novelty of the first one worn off, and KOTM for obvious reasons we should know by now).
We know that Toho wants Godzilla to be mainstream and a bigger brand with their marketing campaign “World of Godzilla.” They already have history with Universal in King Kong vs. Godzilla albeit almost 60 years ago (and would be ironic to bring the franchise to the studio after the 2020 remake lol ). Universal is the home of Jurassic Park/World, King Kong, and the Universal Monsters.
They definitely have experience with creature features, and in the case of Toho boosting Godzilla’s popularity, we can hopefully see a theme park attraction among other things.
If things don’t work out next year, I bet money that Toho will take Godzilla to Universal after 2020.
