Godzilla, in the public eye, is a joke. I see the cheese-masters of the 70's referenced all over the place. Never have I seen Godzilla taken seriously except for here and...here. It's a shame that people don't watch the movies for fun, not for the damn realistic stuff like you (Lord Gappa) pointed out previously

I think my main issue with the Indiana Jones sequel was the over-abundance of CGI and the aliens.

Whatever happened to the days of old, where you can watch a movie without people with no imagination griping in the back of the theator how stupid or unrealistisc it is. Isn't that what killed Crystal Skull? Isn't that what's gonna kill a KKvG remake if they ever had the balls to do it? I watch old movies because you know what? No overused CGI! The real deal's up on the screen, not some techno nerd pulling the strings. Even though Jurassic Park is one of the greatest movies of all time, it's responsible for launching the once new CGI into cliche central.

FOr starters, how is this "the real deal"?:

Also, the advent of CGI has let to innumerable advances in the field of special effects. Look at Avatar for example, or the last Lord of the Rings. How would that look with puppets and scenery? Lets face it, we all love those old classic special effects that we can touch and feel, but CGI is the future, and it can open so many more action pathways than physical effects could handle in their heyday. I'm not saying every physical miniature and costume needs to be CGI (that would lead to bland and tasteless movies) but saying CGI has no place in the current cinema scene is, I'm sorry, quite ridiculous.

CGI doesn't make bad movies, bad plot/story/whatever makes bad movies.

Well, everything in the picture is real. Real floor, real suits, real sky backdrop, real miniatures, real fake snow, etc.

Avatar is a perfect exhibit to explain my feelings on contemporary CGI: Several billion dollars in box office for a movie with a script that had all the originality of throwing "Fern Gully" and "Dances with Wolves" into a blender and running the juice through an inkjet.

Return of the King, on the other hand...I'll give you that. It wouldn't have worked pre-CGI. The difference is that LotR had the writing to give substance to the visuals.

I swear, when that new Godzilla movie comes out in theaters, if I hear even a WHISPER of a complaint about it being unrealistic, I will turn around and punch that person in the face.

No don't do that you won't see the rest of the movie...

I don't see a remake in the mix, but I would still LOVED to see a rematch.

At most I'd want the lost project direct sequel to be made. The original is a classic and we should let it be.

Actually Godzilla vs the Devil was never even CONSIDERED made, it was just a rumor spreading around after the success of The Exorcist and Omen. Toho confirmed that there never was a movie planned.
But i bet you probalbly knew that sarcasm

Sequel, remake, whatever, I want to see a modern take on the Eighth Wonder of the World and the King of the Monsters beating the hell out of each other.

I get the argument that modern audiences wouldn't get it. It's too much of a fantasy, it's not grounded enough in reality. I get that. But at the same time, is it THAT much sillier than the fantasy and sci-fi coming out now? If people can handle superheroes and hobbits and alien robots that turn into cars, isn't there maybe a chance that, if presented right, modern audiences could handle a giant ape and a radioactive dinosaur?

I'm really asking, do you think they could handle it, because I'm not so sure right now. I used to think for sure that it'd be too silly and audiences (especially in the US) would sneer at it and say it's stupid. But yet, silly-ass shit like Freddy vs. Jason and Transformers 2 and Avatar (blue Indian space cats with psychic hair!) all make money! They may not be heralded as classics, but people go see them! Maybe non-monster fans COULD get on board with KKvG2.

In order for it to work I feel like they'd either need to:
-Come up with a clever, thoughtful way of explaining both monsters, their rivalry, and how they can possibly exist in the real world, with a well-written, thrilling adventure script.
-Go balls-out and make it crazy, funny and even a little self-aware. A real throwback to the crazy monster-mashes of yore.

I'd be happy with either one of these.

I hate hate HATE this. People being critical about realism in Hollywood, when fact is, none of it is realistic in the first place. Hobbits and blue people sweeping up Oscars and breaking the Box Office, but Godzilla is too fake for them. Give me a f@ckin break.

This not only applies to Sci-Fi, but film and television in general (action movies, thrillers, comedies, crime shows, hell even most dramas are almost always removed from reality). If you want realistic storytelling, watch The Wire, or read a well-researched book; and stay the hell away from 99.99% of mainsteam movies and television.

You have to remember: if it's CGI = instantly realisitc for some people. Godzilla's just a fat guy in a rubber suit.
