Godzilla: Gangsters & Goliaths

Postby Arrow » Tue Jun 14, 2011 10:29 am

Discuss IDW's Godzilla: Gangsters & Goliaths mini-series, which comes out tomorrow - June 15th. It's only five issues, so I don't know if a thread devoted to every issue is necessary like the on-going Kingdom of Monsters. Someone else can make that decision.

Anyway, same rules as the other threads apply.

Issue #1 wrote:Detective Makoto Sato is on an unrelenting quest to bring down the Takahashi crime syndicate. Sato's efforts earn him a one-way trip to a tropical getaway, courtesy of the Tokyo criminal underworld. The exotic locale? Monster Island! Alone and facing death at the hands of both gangsters and goliaths, Sato must use his wits to survive-and enlist the aid of some most unusual friends.

And just so you know, you can change your vote on this poll as G&G continues.

I am really excited about this series, and the cover you posted is the most amazing cover yet. KOM or G&G!

How many covers does the first issue have? I just see the one with Godzilla and Anguirus.

There's also this version:

Sadly, it's a special "Comic Con" edition.

Can't wait to see how this series will unfold. By some of the covers, it seems Mothra is to have a major part in the story. And it's about time, as it IS her 50th anniversary.

As far as I can tell, there are 4 covers. I don't remember seeing that second cover before today. (The Ponticelli one, the one where Godzilla's tail takes up 40% of the page.)

F@ck that's awesome, best Godzilla cover I've ever seen actually. The Big G looks mean and mad as hell.

Like Gappa, I too, say the words:

How did Japan capture Ghidorah?! O.O
And Batta, I do wonder how he was captured but damn my interest in this mini comic has indeed rise up.

I wonder how the other monsters behave around King Ghidorah, do they keep out of his path?
Do they hide from him? Do they beat his ass if he tries to start anything?

Just finished reading the issue. I REALLY liked it.

It reminds me of the heisei series with a little showa thrown in. I already like the detective character. And the Art is good. The artstyle reminds me alot of the JOKER graphic novel.

I would not be surprise if people end up liking the mini series more then the on-going series.

I'd never even though that gangsters and giant monsters would make an excellent combo.

I don't like it as much as the main series, but I like it.

Hi all,

I picked this issue up today and read it while waiting on a train to work. Initial reaction to the first part of the story after one read through from me is a positive one. I liked the story and the way it managed to quickly intoduce us to some of the main characters we shall follow over the 5 issues. a mixture of linear story telling mixed with flash backs was a nice touch. We finally get to see a kaiju throw down even if it is all to brief. Art is strong though Godzilla looks for the most part as if he's pregnant so big is his belly in some shots. The other kaiju we see are all well drawn, Mothra being particularly good. I got a sense of her fuzzy hide so good was the inking on some panels. Down side for me. Actually apart from the 8/10 pages of useless adverts at the back not a lot. A far more solid start than the main series had in my opinion.

Good work All round.
