Wow...that might maybe cover a small percent of actual Welfare users. But how about the 22 year old mommy of 8 with 6 different men? Or the people who live with another person and yet dont claim them on their 'household income' and still get it?

I would be all for this plan if the state had valid reason to drug test someone.

And drug testing at work is for safety. Do you want a crane operator coming to work trippin' balls? What's a stoned Welfare recipient going to do? Trip, fall into you and give you a papercut with the check?

Technically both people you just listed would generally be considered as abusing the system as it is. Also regardless of safety, why should taxpayers fund a program that IS indeed largely abused (or have benefit $ used for drugs)?

She shouldn't have been stupid now should she, and she's living off the system too. I can see getting welfare till you get on your feet but there are several people in this country who make a living off of it. Hell if I had my way you'd have six months to get on your feet then you'd be done with it.

I think if the state suspects something - fine, drug test.

Let's say 99% of all appilicants pass the drug test. The state reimburses for the test. Thats $30 per test, just image 100 tests a day x 5 days a week x 52 weeks a year. That's ALOT of money. Id rather that money put into case workers to research people already on Welfare living with someone unwed with actual household incomes that would negate them of the Welfare assistance, or the mother's who keep having children just to get more Welfare money.

THAT should be investigated, NOT throwing money at drug tests for everyone 'just because'. There are MANY people in this country who live off government programs for years and years who actually NEED IT but there are more and more who just abuse it. Im pretty damn sure people who abuse it through loopholes (like I mentioned about household incomes and children and just being lazy) outweigh drug users.

So why not fight abuse that is DEF there already? Yes it costs $, yet if we go with your $30 estimate for a test...how much $ would be saved by NOT paying benefits to those that fail? It would pay for QUIET a few tests I bet.

Show me cause for testing these applicants.

Let's say 100 people come in today for Welfare. 97 pass. That's $2910 thrown out the window 'just because'. Let's say that's just an average for 5 days a week. That's $14550 a WEEK! x 52 weeks is $756600 A YEAR!

You could pay 25 peopel $30k a year to RESEARCH those who abuse it that a drug test WOULDNT catch - like Big Mama with 8 kids by 6 men, those who dont report their real household income, those 'lazy skreeonk'.

I'd rather create 25 jobs and weed out the defrauders (if they catch 2-3 a year that covetrs their salary) then blow $750k on drug tests PER YEAR PER OFFICE.

wataru's issue is he's just to lazy to keep a job and since he's on vic he doesn't want to lose his "benefits" while he sits around all day and downloads shit on the internet or goes out to Wal-Mart/Walgreens and buys useless bullshit that nobody ever needs.

That's all this is about, it's a good idea that should have been implemented a long time ago by all states.

At least up here if you have kids, the kids would be covered by WIC (obviously not the father).

We have WIC down here as well. There are many government aid programs but theyre just so cocked up. When my father died last year, my father's SSI was reduced to Survivors Benefits which is considerably less then what he was making with SSI. We she applied for food stamps and was turned down because she made too much money - nevermind that she doesnt get the money until mid-July and has to go from Jan. til June without it. Luckily Im able to take care of her now, otherwise she'd be scrapping by for food and her meds (she, like my father, has major heart problems). The 'system' is so skreeonk up, and getting more skreeonk up because of system like this drug testing BS, that no one can get help. Spending money without thought of where it goes and no spending money on programs to stop existing leaks.

I agree the "system" (as well MANY others ) are seriously flawed, and abused. On the other hand I see this drug testing as at least a start in "fixing" one of the loopholes. If it stops even 100-1,000, the benefits that wouldn't be paid out would easily cover the test costs. The ONLY people this would hurt/should bother people is those who have something to hide (would piss dirty).

It violates the 4th amendment.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

A government-mandated drug test for welfare recipients would be a search without probable cause. They aren't hiring employees, so drug-free workplace acts don't really apply here.

Plus it's just a stupid idea: http://www.aclu.org/drug-law-reform/drug-testing-public-assistance-recipients-condition-eligibility
Now it's dark...
