Was that for Ghidorah, The Three Head Monster? Because I distincly remember them calling the larva a "he" and wasn't sure if it was just Mandela effect.
Honestly don't know. I'm just fairly certain at least one Showa film labeled Mothra a "he". Actually I always thought it was odd they called Mothra "he" more often than not, because I always assumed Mothra was female.

Same here. If it is Ghidorah, it'd make sense as an offspring and not the orginal. Though, then there's the problem that Mothra in Sea Monster and DAM is called a female but there's barely a timeline anyhow.

DAM is so far in the future, I always took it to be a different Mothra.

So, this is probably a separate thread- but assuming the Mothra movie is canon and the timeline is a timeline, how many generations of Mothra are we potentially looking at in the showa era? Seems like a pretty quick turnover rate, especially if the elder in Sea Monster isn't the same as the offspring from vs. Mothra/GTTHM...

I always took it as such: Mothra Larva -> Adult (Mothra). That Adult is the same adult in Mothra vs. Godzilla. The surviving Larva (fairies say the other died) is in Ghidorah. It has matured to an Adult for Sea Monster. DAM is set in 1999, which is some 30ish years later than all of these so it's an entirely different Mothra generation.

This has also always been my interpretation. So that is three on-screen generations of Mothra.

I would think the same. But if the offspring are male and the adult is a she in Sea Monster, we'd be potentially looking at another.

Unless, of course, Mothra becomes female in the process of entering imago form (as some animals do change in nature); it would make sense for perpetuation issues, since the Mothra species is so small, if the adult always transitions to a fertile (perhaps self-fertilized during the cocooned transition process; essentially, Imago emerges pregnant) female that lays an egg, hence perpetuating the species only with a single member.

Y'know, unless the new eggs just form out of glowing sparkles like in the ROM trilogy.

Do they explicitly attach gender to Mothra in Sea Monster?

I don't ever remember a gender being attached to any Mothra other than female (except Leo). But also yeah, I would assume that Mothra reproduces asexually somehow. This would fit the theme that her children are not so much a new generation as they are simply a rebirth of herself.

I always loved Harry Potter and the Deathly Ghidorahs myself.
But I always thought of Mothra reincarnating herself after each death.
Also I always saw Godzilla as male, it fits.

You've just put more thought into than Toho ever has.

If you have to have some kind of continuity in your Shows films than this is probably the best explanation.

I always figured Mothra was asexual. If Mothra is female, it would be like a certain lizard species that is entirely female.

Well, if we’re going by the separation of biological sex from gender (let’s not get into a debate about it, please), then you could say Mothra is biologically asexual but still in most cases a “she.”

It varies from continuity to continuity. Most of the times he’s male, but once he was a hermaphrodite and another time assexual.
