Millennials and Z Gen audiences access footage of Kong and Godzilla's battles on Youtube rather easily.
They know about Kong the same way people know about Jason Voorhees even if they've never seen a Friday the 13th film in their life. Certain characters permeate the pop culture and through references in unrelated media people are familiarized with them.

Wait. Is someone here saying that people don't know who Kong is? Like, really? I'm not reading through 3 pages of bickering, but is that really what's going on?

Since Kong already defeated Godzilla in 1962, it's what audiences are geared to expect in 2020, which makes Godzilla the de facto underdog.
You realize the average movie goer probably isn't even aware that the '62 film exists, right?
People know Kk fought Godzilla, they may not know the exact details but they know the 62 film exists.

Yeah, it's news to me too. I'm still flabbergasted that Legendary's Godzilla and Kong films grossed a combined billion dollars despite audiences not knowing who the characters are. :)

Nobody is saying people don't know who Kong is. They're just saying that the GA isn't gonna expect Godzilla to win just because Kong won in '62, because there's a good chance that a decent chunk of them don't even know about the '62 film. Don't try to twist what people are saying in order to make everyone who disagrees with you look stupid.

I don't need to twist anything to make anyone look stupid if they're using an argument that implies the general audience doesn't know Godzilla and Kong have met before. That is one of the VERY FEW Godzilla films that the general audience does know of.

Now, with that said, using the argument that Kong will win just because he did in the 1962 film is just as dumb.

I wasn't saying you were twisting what people were saying, I was saying Thunderbird was. You were just asking a question, and he answered it with a lie.

I gotta say, this is the one of the weirdest discussions I have ever seen on this site. And that says quite a lot.

Seriously, to imply that KKvG (one of the most succesful Godzilla films of it's time and the one who turned Godzilla into a franchise to begin with) caused Godzilla to lose box office numbers and popularity, and that Godzilla potentially losing here will cause the same effect, is borderline asinine.

Believe me, I would love for Godzilla to win this time, but not due to utter bullshit reasoning like this

If you could point out which sequel following KKvG gained box office numbers over it, you might have an argument.

Once Rocky Balboa defeated Apollo Creed, would a series of films about the former champ taking on new contenders draw the same box office as Rocky 3?

As they say in the Casino business, everyone loves a winner.

If it wasn't for KKvG, there would have been no following Godzilla movies. It revived the franchise after a-7 year hiatus caused by a mediocore sequel. Of course it had a high gross, KK was more popular in Japan at the time and coupled with Godzilla, it was basically an event crossover. Of course thanks to it an the following movies, Godzilla gained more popularity later on.

Yes, everyone does love a winner, but movies where giant atomic lizards fight giant monkeys are not boxing matches.

21st century Kong doesn't quite awe audiences like his 20th century version once did. You beat around the bush about Godzilla's post-'62 box office. Kong 33's battle with T-Rex was very much inspired by boxing matches, as Willis O'Brien freely admitted. Toho marketed KKvG like a sumo or pro wrestling match, promos included. And even the original Rocky had dialogue that compared Rocky and Apollo's exhibition fight to a monster movie.

Let's face it, whether the battles are human or kaiju... the camera, the audience, and the box office follows the winner.

You talk like Godzilla movies started flopping after King Kong vs Godzilla.

I think the general disagreement wasn't that audiences weren't aware of the 1962 film, but that the audiences knew Kong won in the original. I don't think the average joe knows that at all and it's downright silly to assume.

It's even more silly to assume that the outcome of said film caused subsequent Godzilla films to lose money at the box office, as if KKVG wasn't a once-in-a-lifetime event that was guaranteed to draw bigger numbers than average. The films only lost money later on due to the advent of television taking viewers away from theater screens. It's why Ultra Q and Ultraman were big hits in the mid-sixties to late 70's and outlive traditional theatrical kaiju films.

I'm #TeamGoji all the way, but I'm pretty sure Kong will win, specially if he ends up being less than 80m tall. People just loves the underdogs, and Kong is more known overseas.

The ideal outcome could go either way, but it needs to play to the monster’s strengths and weaknesses. If Godzilla wins, it should be with brute force. If Kong wins, it should be because he outsmarts Godzilla with stealth and crude weapons. I definitely don’t want to see Godzilla beat Kong by outwitting him, nor do I want to see Kong win by overpowering Godzilla. If they pull this off correctly, they can secure a winner without making either look weak.

All that being said, I would prefer Godzilla to win.

I think we are overrating Kong and Godzilla's popularity here.

People definitely know more about the existence of Friday the 13th movies than they do about Godzilla vs Kong. The general audience does not know this movie exists. Not from what ive seen anyway.

No way is it general knowledge that Godzilla and Kong fought. No way

I think Kong. Why?
1) Underdog. Might be smaller and doesn't breathe fire.
2) Often dies in his movies.
3) Really endured me with being the protective god of Skull Island's people.
So kind of makes me think of some classic Thing vs. Hulk fights.
I'd rather both survived but we had a clear winner.

Godzilla is unable to die due to the contract with Toho, so I already know he’s guaranteed to win.

Victory =/= killing.

I don't know how many times I've had to explain this.

Personally, I would like to see a nod to the original '62 movie but this time with Godzilla visibly going "home" and kong's fate the mystery for decades.
