Re: Shin Godzilla - The General Discussion Thread
I have to be honest, I'm not sure I get why the effects are so harshly criticized with Shin when you look at the grand history of this franchise.
They're almost always brought up as a negative, but are they really that bad in comparison to what we've seen in past Godzilla films?

Exactly. I've never understood why people hold Shin to some mystical higher standard.Godzillian wrote:Never understood the complaints myself either especially considering how garbage most Toho Godzilla films cgi isMaritonic wrote:I have to be honest, I'm not sure I get why the effects are so harshly criticized with Shin when you look at the grand history of this franchise.

I'm guessing maybe because they chose to go wholly CGI, and it's like 'If you can't execute that flawlessly, don't make the switch'? I don't know, I didn't hold those complaints, so I'm just speculating.Maritonic wrote:Exactly. I still prefer a suit Godzilla- especially since, in the last decade, screen-time has become king for the enjoyment of a Godzilla movie, for some reason... but despite my oft-stated not finding this film anything special, I didn't really have any problem with the effects in Shin Godzilla, or the use of CGI to realize this somewhat-more-exotic design.

I think, personally? People don't understand that Japanese filmmakers don't put the same funds into films and CGI that American films do, so they make the CGI comparison and therefore think it looks like crap, therefore it HAS to be bad.Zarm wrote:I'm guessing maybe because they chose to go wholly CGI, and it's like 'If you can't execute that flawlessly, don't make the switch'? Shin's CGI never took me out of the experience. Unlike some of the CGI shots in GMK.

tbh there were very few instances when the CGI for Shin wasn't up to snuff but even those are minimal and not overly distracting

imo Shin has phenomenal CGI, especially for a Japanese movie. I would even say that it looks flawless in some shots
why did i have to be the chosen one?

I didn't know that alot of people seemed to dislike the effects. This movie's effects are beautiful. The only thing that MAY have looked slightly off would be the trains in the final battle but that's really reaching. Godzilla looks beautiful in this film.

Eh I still think the first transformation sequence is pretty iffy looking.
I can't believe that Godzilla was the only surviving member of its species, but if we continue conducting nuclear tests, it's possible that another Godzilla might appear somewhere in the world again.

Two bad CGI shots and suddenly the CGI in the entire film is awful and the film is trash.

Wait is this about me? I just whined about two shots where I lost the illusion when Shin moves a little too quickly. Looks fantastic when he's moving a bit slower. I never said the rest of the CGI is trash.
I mean...I still prefer Godzilla to be a man in a suit with machines and puppets. But American Godzilla and Shin have made me soften a lot on CGI Godzillas.

Yeah, some of the animation is wonky for sure. The CGI is decent in most scenes, though.

Some neat concept art has been added to the main site. We've seen most of it before but how do we feel about Godzilla splitting apart and all that?
https://www.tohokingdom.com/movies/godz ... ce.html#ca
I see why Toho vetoed the idea but I like its implications in the film and if a sequel ever happens it'd be interesting to see it come into play - I can certainly see something like it happening if Godzilla wakes up and is nuked (the same idea essentially happens in the anime).

I'm not a fan. But then, I'm not a fan of Shin breaking into a thousand humanoids either.

Re: Shin Godzilla - The General Discussion Thread
Not to beat a dead horse, but Shin's effects served their purpose almost flawlessly in my eyes. They weren't Hollywood levels of well integrated, and occasionally came off as either too stiff or too rubbery, but generally speaking, they worked very well.
The climactic Tokyo scene looks amazing (it has quickly become one of my all-time favorite Godzilla rampage scenes, especially with the amazing direction all around), Shin's first form has a great amount of detail and interestingly "natural" movements, and, ultimately, there's never a moment where the CG is so fake that it takes away from the experience. You never feel pulled out of the fictional world in which the story takes place.
In fact, it's a little like the old Showa pictures. There was a point in time where their effects were only marginally worse than America's counterparts, yet, despite this, their stories could still be taken just as upfrontly. Not everything needs to look impeccable - a production's a production, after all.
