Is Lovecraft one of Iris' insperations?
Intentional or not, coincidence or not, Iris is pretty lovecraften in design. Think about, a squid, stands up right like a man, uses "wings" for flight, has "arms" and has an otherworldly beautiful glow that makes it seem even more alien and not of this world. A lot of these traits sound like Cthulhu. Oh and both come from a long dead city or civilization that has been lost to the sea like Atlantis, Mu for Iris and R'lyeh for Cthulhu. Oh and both seem to have a doomsday cult that worships them.
Obviously the two would never be mistaken for one or the other at a glance but they do share some similar backgrounds story wise and design wise.
It got me wondering if any of the people who gave input for the creatures design had read a Lovecraft story and was inspired by it. If not it's a pretty cool to come up with something lovecraften like while getting ideas from something else like maybe some squid monster from Japanese folklore or a nightmare. Maybe Iris is inspired from some sea or ocean god from the far East. They do mention the 3 houses that make up the deamon's true name are part of the Hydra consultation in the water quadrant of the zodiac. And Iris is compared to the Phoenix of the south as well, an obvious reference to it being related to the bird like Gyaos.
Then again, and I am not being crass or making a joke about Japanese stereotypes, but it could just be inspired from a tentacle monster from pornographic animes. The scene where the young Iris tried fusing with Ayana is said to be filmed like a sex or rape scene to make the viewer uncomfortable. And it's not unheard of, Hedorah's eyes are confirmed to be inspired by a woman's private parts. So it's true about what they say, you can be inspired by anything because we take inspiration from everything.
Or maybe I'm reading too much into things.

A part of me hopes I'm wrong and that they were unaware of Lovecraft. Making a lovecraften style monster by accident seems cooler.GodzillaFan1990's wrote:Could be or maybe not. For all we know maybe an coincidence like Dante and Inuyasha is.

We'll probably never know, but Irys' design and origin feel more fantasy than sci fi.

Personally, I highly doubt it.

Sure, maybe there was a pinch of Lovecraftian influence but to me it looks more typical of just that, a space monster from a manga or Kamen Rider or Dragon Ball Z or tentacle porn. It's way too unmistakably Japanese.
This design has a lack of pitch black darkness and unfathomably old and ancient dread and cosmic horror for it to resemble anything Howard Phillips has imagined.

It's not just the design, it's the backstory.

Irys' backstory is pretty straight forward onmyoji fair. The Atlantis connection is vaguely Lovecrafty but the Gamera Trilogy owes more to Plato in that regard.

I see no connection. All aspects of that character is absolutely not dark or hideous enough. Occultists are a dime a dozen.

Tentacles ≠ Lovecraftian
Most of Lovecraft's godlike pantheon, races and creatures are totally indifferent to humanity, they barely register us while Iris' entire story revolves around his unhealthy connection to Ayana.
I think Iris' inspirations are a bit more... suggestive. Look at his baby form or the object jutting from his crotch as an adult.

Iris has more in common with the works of H.R Giger than H.P Lovecraft.
Also that's a terrible depiction of Cthulhu.

Re: Is Lovecraft one of Iris' insperations?
He does look eldritch and Gigeresque enough too, but seems more fantasy-based. Plus, he's not really an unfathomably powerful deity, but rather some kind of bioweapon created by the Atlanteans using Gyaos material (given he has the same genetic material as them.) in case Gamera went rogue. So, design-wise, he does look somewhat Lovecraftian, but i'm pretty sure it's just a coincidence.

I think Iris is too colorful to be Gigeresque either.
More than anything he's a Mahiro Maeda creation (designer for the Gamera trilogy, Ultraman Great, Evangelion, God Warrior Appears in Tokyo, Shin Godzilla, etc.).

I think he’s closer to one of the Angels from Evangelion if anything.
Yeah, Godzilla wins... sometimes. I mean, he was killed by Dr. Serizawa's patented bubble-bath formula, heartburn, missiles, and poor box office returns, got his ass kicked by a drunken, circus-escaped gorilla, then he was beaten by two newborn worms, yeah some “king”.

Eva Mark 09's regenerated head in Eva 3.0 definitely has an Iris-ish look to it.

Re: Is Lovecraft one of Iris' insperations?
I don't know much about Lovecraft( I've only read two of his stories), but I get a more Evangelion feel from Iris. The orbs on his body and knees, along with the arm blades, are more like an Angel than some ancient monster/god.
