Any love for Godzilla 2 on NES?

Postby Godzilla_Vs._Elvis » Thu Jun 02, 2011 7:53 am

I know, I know, it's a primitive strategy game that is slow paced and repetitive. For some reason, I played the hell out of it as a kid and still bust it out today. I love the element of chance, the low to moderately-high difficulty, and the ability to use Mothra and the Super X. I only wish there were more scenarios and the ability to play as the monsters!

Somebody, mod this rom for me quick! ;)

I actually really enjoyed this game. Not as much as the first. But the stradegy side was pretty cool.

I think I may've actually cried as a small child when I rented this for my NES and realized I couldn't play as Godzilla and that it was nothing like Monster of Monsters. Thought it was complete garbage and still do.

Yeah, when I first played it I thought I had to purposefully run the military into the ground. It took the "game over" screen for me to realize I had the whole thing backwards. I was a slow child.

Just started playing this again recently. I think the idea is great, although the attack combo system is a little confusing. It would be great to attempt a similar strategy type game for a future Godzilla game. It's probably one of the best ideas for a Godzilla game, next to a fighting or building smashing game ala Rampage.

Too "Mothra" and "Freezer Ray" dependant.

The game's ok, although most of the scenarios are pretty easy once you figure out how to utilize your units, plus the slot machine combat system was a bad idea. May have been better to have added more monsters, some that are controlled by the aliens and some on your side (besides Mothra).

A Godzilla game where you don't get to play as any of the monsters, instead its the military, and the fights are depended on a slot machine........FAIL!!!!

Really, eliminate the slot machine and it really could've been a kickass game.

Well, atleast now we know how the military feels in just about every Godzilla movie when their plans fail miserably.

That was my feeling as well... the odds seem so unimaginably stacked against the player.

I always found the Game Gear strategy game a hella of a lot better than this one too. Granting the ability to play on either side adds replay value, but also the odds have been stacked more evenly thanks to Mothra, Mecha-King Ghidorah and others appearing on the human's side.

I have this game, and granted I haven't played it in ages, I dont recall it being all that difficult. I remembered I really didn't like the fact that you could not play as the monsters (I was hoping for something along the lines of the 1st Godzilla game). But I do remember, whatever mission (I think the last one) where you could built the Moonlight SY3, that ship could do major damage against the monsters. I guess it shows my age because I find most older games I grew up with to be pretty easy, and new ones quite overlycomplex. Whereas most people now in their late teens/early 20's have no problems playing Gears of War or Assasins Creed, but give them the original Mega Man, or Ninja Gaiden and they think its "too hard"

The SY-3 is available in almost half the missions and once you get it built it's pretty much over for the monsters, unless they get a lucky big hit on it. I found this game really easy as well, only a few of the missions offer any kind of challenge. To make it more of a contest I usually assigned number values to the cities and installations, and if the monsters destroyed 50% or more of them I'd considered it a monster victory, even if they eventually were defeated.

You guys are making me feel like a softy... and I tend to project myself as a pretty competent gamer.

Possibly I just didn't invest the time needed in Godzilla 2, but I always found it frustrating. Granted, I first played this game after playing the Game Gear version, which I loved, so my expectations were somewhat already in place.

No need to feel that way. Its just smoke and mirrors, and giving an old gamer a moment of glory. Heh. I still remember how the first time I utterly failed at Guitar Hero (and never played again). I captivated friends & family (mostly ranging in ages 8-12) by moving through Super Mario Bros. 3 effortlessly

I think I appreciate Godzilla 2 much more now than I did when it was initially released, simply because I wanted so much for a sequel to the original game, and what we got was so vastly different (or in my opinion much less fun than Monster of Monsters).

I broke out Godzilla 2 and played "Attack from the center of the Earth", or whatever the scenario is called where Baragon shows up about midway through the game, well after all the other monsters have appeared. Dispatched him pretty speedily, but after my SY-3 took a big hit from the UFO (not enough to destroy it, but enough to have to send it for repairs) I switched off the game, basically conceding. Talk about famous last words...
