Agreed, but with a two hour run time as it is, I feel like they did what they could to at least address that civilians were going to be an issue. They did discuss that civilians must never receive fire, etc. The human element made this one of the highest quality films in the franchise, in my opinion.

@the new Shin statue, did that replace the old Heisei statue in Hibya? Cause I got a photo of me putting a cig in the statues mouth and other general shenanigans when I visited there.

It’s not pretentious at all. Shin is clearly a reaction to the Fukushima disaster+the current Japanese political situation, the latter of with I have a vague understanding of but can’t comprehend fully. I’ve seen it five+times and over time I’ve gotten more out of it and noticed funny little things or motifs absent from the first viewing, that native Japanese speakers and people would notice within the first viewing.

A year and a half later, I can say with confidence, Shin is probably my favorite Godzilla movie, or at least up there in rotation with G54/GVH.

It did replace the Heisei statue: that one was moved.

I think last time I used a preference revealer Shin ended up 3rd on my list I believe. Its definitely top 5 and one of the few I can call a legitimately "good" movie.

Wow, I can't believe pretty soon this movie is going to be two years old; it feels like just yesterday we were all hyped and speculating.

I wished we got scenes like in 54 where we SEE people get trampled, burned, and actually killed. Morbid I know but the tone of this movie fits this and we only see a family directly die from Godzilla's rampage. I love the scene where Tokyo is nuked but the city just feels empty to me. I don't feel like anyone dies. I know the Prime Minister's chopper is shot down, but we needed to SEE his reaction. Just my two cents to this.

Ultimately, Shin is more of an intellectual exercise than an emotion-driven story. That works to its benefit in terms of being able to lay out its themes and concepts clearly, but it does cut down a bit on audience engagement and a sense of stakes.
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

What exactly does “Humanity must learn to co-exist with Godzilla” mean?

It’s said by Yaguchi at the climax of the film after Shin’s frozen, but how exactly would humanity learn to co-exist with Godzilla, especially if he reanimated?
Yeah, Godzilla wins... sometimes. I mean, he was killed by Dr. Serizawa's patented bubble-bath formula, heartburn, missiles, and poor box office returns, got his ass kicked by a drunken, circus-escaped gorilla, then he was beaten by two newborn worms, yeah some “king”.

I figured it meant 'have to learn to live with him standing here like a terrifying, looming statue memorializing the imminent end of the world (and metaphorically, learn to live with the potential for whatever existential threat he represents in your interpretation of this film).' :)

I wonder if the next movies are gonna be an anthology series, like the Millennium series. Because I would rather have it be like the Heisei VS. series with the connecting storyline.

I would find that ideal, as well. I don't see Shin as having the proper potential to become a series (it is best as a one-off, to me)- and I would love to see an ongoing series again.

Good point. Who knows, maybe they might bring Bagan on the big screen finally.
