Based upon a conversation I had with a friend about the new film:

"I haven't seen it yet, what's it like?"

"Well in 1954, the Military uses the nuclear tests as a cover up to try and kill Godzilla, then in 1999--"

"Wait, wait, wait... They tell the tests were a cover up?"

"Yeah, why?"

"*chuckles* So, in other words, we weren't testing the most destructive weapons on Earth, poisoning a fishing crew and causing the Lucky Dragon incident, endangering natives and wildlife in the Marshall Islands, we were trying to kill Godzilla?"

"Yeah... Why...?"

"I have never heard of a more absurd way of whitewashing America's postwar relations with Japan than that. What did Japan think of it?"

"They co-produced it."

"... That boggles my mind. And does Godzilla fight the military in it?"

"No... He crashes through the Golden Gate Bridge to get away..."

"Did the military cooperate in the filming?"

"Yes..."

"What a joke... I might not even see it now."

So that's the latest.

Two from reddit;

One being that you could kill Godzilla, without any doubt, with a sufficient quantity of...tasers. While that's not incorrect, maybe, that's still very, very odd.

Two is that Godzilla's roar was too loud in the new movie. Not too loud for audiences, but too loud for a creature Godzilla's size. Several times too loud, apparently. Now, while one could make a case for Godzilla being both an archosaur and a creature specialised for aquatic life, thus likely lacking the biological apparatus to produce such a sound as he did, I highly doubt even such simple biological knowledge played a part in the commenter's statement. I'm just wondering what the commenter was basing his statement on. Did he have another 108-metre tall bipedal reptile to reference, or was that entirely based upon pure individual speculation?

Scientist who are fans have actually done the math and said a creature of Godzilla's size could be able to roar loud enough to be heard 3+ miles and that being too close to his mouth when he roars would actually kill you. So too loud my ass.

Fun fact, it's possible to get a rough estimate of G14's roar's intensity using a few official statements:
1) At near-ground level, the roar traveled '3 miles', roughly equal to 4.8 km.
2) At that distance, people within their homes still managed to hear the roar clearly enough to apparently become concerned about it, suggesting that it had a moderately high intensity at that range.
3) When asked about what would happen if the roar originated from a point equivalent to Godzilla's own height, it was stated that it would potentially double the effective range.

So maximum effective range is 6 miles, which is 9.656 km, and the assumed dB level at that range is around 70 dB, or about the average 'notably loud' intensity of the average street or radio, sounds that would draw the attention of people going about their daily lives.

Using this handy calculator, I came up with an estimated dB level of 150 for a near point-blank roar.

What does this entail?

Well, it means that far from being quite, in real life G14 would be as loud as a turbojet engine, and at close range would be deafening. He wouldn't kill with the intensity of his roar, but killing anything with sound intensity alone is more the stuff of pure fantasy. But, he would be capable of causing severe damage to your ears, that's for sure, and be heard above 'lesser' sounds, such as thunder and artillery fire.

He'd also be beating out the record holders for most intense sounds made by land animals, including the infrasonic calls of elephants.

But that's not all! In water, dB intensity increases by an approximate 62 units, and given that G14 is aquatic, it's only fitting that he'd have a mighty call below the waves.

At 212 dB, he's beating out blue whales and increasing the maximum effective range to several dozen kilometres. Absurdly, he's still beaten by the sperm whale, whose echolocation can create a sound equaling 230 dB at maximum. But given that we're talking about a roar, not a sound specialized for high-intensity, Godzilla really has no equal.

Not true, sounds can be loud enough to make your heart and lungs move against their will, louder than that and it can stop them completely.

Well, that's fairly interesting. I decided to look into it, and it seems that for decibel level, a value of 185-200 could theoretically kill a person through a generation of an air embolism or the rupturing of the lungs. Thank you for making me aware of this.

Still, Godzilla's roar does fall short of this outside of water.

In water, though...it exceeds that threshold, though you'd have to be right in front of him for any major effect, it would seem, and I'm not sure if the threshold itself increases along with the decibel value when compared to intensity in air.

Grab a snack and sit down near the fireplace, this is gonna be a long one. Couldn't find the stupid things people say topic so this is close enough.

This guy I've known since middle school thinks everything Hollywood is the best thing since sliced bread and everything else just sucks (unless it's anime or games). I just got out of an argument (someone else, unrelated) so my mind is a little scrambled but I'll try my best to remember some of the things he's said and done. What I can tell you is:

- He hates kaiju films for being "unrealistic" but loves Pacific Rim which is easily one of the most stylized kaiju films out there plus a love letter to the genera, the AOT anime, and Bayformers. This is the same guy who will post a video of an "alien integration", with the fakest looking effects since SyFy on his facebook asking people if they think it's real with his roommates facepalming in the comments telling him it's fake dued. I honestly wouldn't mind all that much except...

- He is always shiting on stuff I like. If it isn't something we both like or he likes, he can not shut the fuck up and just watch the movie, he has to criticize it on EVERYTHING. He mainly craps on how Japan's effects are always 10 years behind Hollywood and no amount of explaining how Hollywood has had a monopoly on films for too long will get through to him. You can tell him by the time studios like Toho catch up, Hollywood has moved on and he still won't listen.

-Refuses to admit when a foreign film has impressed him because...I dunno. Amazed the guy even likes anime at all since he thinks only the west makes good movies.

- He shits on the kaiju films for using suits. This is a guy who is a HUGE fan of two very famous rubber suit monsters, the Xenomorph and Predator.

- He bitches about how awful the dubbing the Attack on Titan movie is. I tell him to just watch it sub. He then bitches about how he doesn't want to read and the Japanese are horrible actors. So he's not giving the film a chance at all, since he doesn't like reading subs but he also hates the dub. Animes get a free pass.

- He asks me if I'm looking forward to Godzilla 2. When I tell him I've become disillusioned with the fanbase because of harassment and death threats he dismisses my feelings on the subject.

- I wasn't planning on bringing Godzilla up, but since he did I showed him a trailer for Monster Planet. He is interested but I think it's only because it's an anime.

- After he points out how messed up Godzilla is in the trailer I say "he's worse in his last film" and show him a trailer for Shin Godzilla. 30 seconds into the trailer "they need to buy newer cameras."

- Because I can't find a video that shows off the atomic breath he tells me I can show him later. Next time we hang out I brought my copy of Shin, not to show the whole movie, just parts. And he's like "nah you don't have to show me".

- Eventually I do show off parts of Shin. And he seriously fucking goes there. Out of the blue. He makes an Asians have a tiny penis joke. I try to defuse the moment by telling him "you do realize Shin's tail actually is a giant dick right?" his response? "Did you touch it?" I can not even, he has no filter, because I don't know how that running through his head seemed like a good idea at all. I told him dude, not cool, that's the kind of shit my bullies back in middle school would say. His defense? "I was joking dude." It came off as such a "it's just a prank bro" attitude, like you seriously can't say I'm sorry? Now Mr. Toots and I will make immature jokes about things we like but that is earned, we know we aren't serious. This guy, it feels like he actually believes the shit he is saying and just says "I'm just joking" to save face.

- His reasoning for doing the above? "You have it on Japanese so I can't understand what they are saying and I don't wanna read subs." I was showing him the dynamic military action, something he bitched 2014 lacked, you really don't need to know what the characters are saying.

- "Ah so they used the crappy 2000 Godzilla roar." He was talking about Godzilla 1998, hilarious in hindsight. He was confused when I told him that was the classic Godzilla roar. This is the same guy who used to say Godzilla 98 was better because it's more realistic, now he shits on it because 2014 is better. 2014 is pretty much just Toho Godzilla taking place in the U.S., outside of design tweaks he's the same character, the only thing changed is the location.

- "It was all right." He was trying to not admit he was impressed by the Tokyo Atomic Breath destruction scene, another thing he bitched 2014 was lacking, plus you know the U.S. military did more in Shin. "You're full of shit, stop acting like you weren't impressed." He starts laughing. I know cool or impressive is a subjective thing, but you don't need to be a fan of Godzilla to know the city destruction was well done, or be a military person to know surviving bunker busters and shooting down 3, multi-billion dollar stealth bombers is a big deal.

Side note, Sometimes I wonder if I even wanna be a film maker anymore, people have become spoiled by amazing effects every year, had that scene been done in Godzilla 98 it would have blown people away. Now days when I show it off, people seem unfazed. I think part of it might even be because it's largely a cast of Japanese actors they don't know and not someone they recognize like Will Smith or Bruce Willis there is a disconnect with western audiences who aren't fans.

- He thought Shin Godzilla was a zombie. Despite me pointing out multiple times those are scars and cancer from radiation.

- Later, he declares he likes the American Godzilla (talking about 2014) better because "his jaw is more realistic." Again, this is a guy who is a fan of Pacific Rim, which is way more stylized than most Godzilla films and is going more for a surreal nightmare than real. You can tell him Godzilla is supposed to be fantastical. he won't have any of it.

-Outside of the AOT anime, he only likes American kaiju. He knows Kaiju is Japanese for monster and a genera started over there. Sadly he has not gained respect for the films that started it all in Japan even when he knows without those films guys like Del Toro would have probably never made PR.

There's more but that's what I can remember off the top of my head. I have to wonder if we are even friends because it seems like we are just guys who happen to know each other and he shits on things I like unless he likes it too. He wants to show me stuff he is into all the time, but if I try showing off something I like that isn't American (or anime or video games) he doesn't even give it a chance and criticizes it to Hell.

Seems like the only thing we have in common is anime, Metroid, Resident Evil, Darkstalkers and our love for women. And even with the latter he sometimes just hates them, acting like women are the devil and his exs just broke up with him because they "were bitches". One of said exes is bi-polar. He is no where near mature enough to even be dealing with that can of worms, never considering that maybe they broke up with him because he has no filter and still acts like he is in high school. He still has the "I have to poop song" as his ringtone, a song I introduced to him years ago. He has had multiple phones since then. We're almost 30 now dude. -_-

He treated a waitress that was serving us food like crap because he didn't know they charge more for beer after a certain hour and acting like it's her fault. This is a guy who works in the food industry, he should know better. Plus this was a strip club, waitress already get treated like crap in a normal restaurant by costumers, I can only imagine how much worse it is in titty bar. She probably has drunk costumers thinking it's okay to just grab her cause her ass is out on display. Mr. Toots and I were so embarrassed we apologized to her and I ended up paying for the beer just to get him to stop. Like come on dude, she just works there.

P.S. If they ever did do a shared cinematic universe with Godzilla, King Kong and Pacific Rim, he would throw the biggest shit fit over Godzilla and Kong "polluting" Pacific Rim.

Aw man, I've seen very similar people just like that. I would've punched him after that comment on paragraph 11. This world is full of way too many douche bags, and I applaud you for putting up with him for so long.

Jeez, guy needs to get his noggin examined. Hollywood sucks! I'd sentence him to 3 Godzillas Revenges and 7 Mothra trilogies, plus 20 Hail Hondas. Then he will be forgiven.

I don't know if it's likely to happen, I personally doubt it, but hopefully the general audience will slowly stop being like that in the coming decades.

Stressful day at work today, and I went to put on something entertaining from youtube, when I suddenly realized...

I'm avoiding the news and comment sections because... they suck. So I usually look at franchises I like. But every franchise I follow closely (bar Godzilla)- Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who- is driving me nuts. And I can't even enjoy a discussion on how they're driving me nuts because even when I think they're going completely off the rails of what their franchises are about or betraying the core messaging... the comments sections are filled with rabid, cult-like defenders who like the flashy effects and think the new installments can do no wrong because they're pretty.

All of which to say... the GA isn't worth listening to. Heck, sometimes the fanbase isn't worth listening to. Sometimes (and believe me, I'm the worst person in the world at this, struggling to practice what I preach), you just have to tune out the world at large- like what you like, dislike what you dislike, and don't even find out what the rest of the populace thinks of it- because it won't change the way you feel, and isn't worth getting annoyed over if they feel diametrically opposite to you.

Like I said, way easier said than done... but in today's world, I think it's becoming a necessity.

It's sad but it's true. It's a result of modern day "geek culture," where you have to constantly prove you're a real fan or the biggest fan by going to crazy lengths, and everyone has to moan about what's wrong with stuff because they suddenly have the tools to let their complaints be heard. People think their opinions about things like Wars, Trek, comics/superhero media, Dr. Who, etc are gold and anyone who disagrees is wrong. As a result comments sections and fanbases turn into free-for-alls and we all come out looking like Rick and Morty fans who didn't get their dipping sauce.

This new idea that if you like something you are automatically shackled to a fandom is dumb in itself.

My friend got Gamera and Godzilla mixed up. She said, and I quote, "Gamera is ugly, he's so, what's the word? Mutated. Yeah, but Godzilla is cute! He's a cute little turtle."

I show her my Gamera the Brave DVD. "Oh..."

See? This proves my point. The GA is crazy.

Beggers can't be choosers. Outside of Mr. Toots and one of my uncles I don't know any kaiju fans in person in my area.

Aw man, I've seen very similar people just like that. I would've punched him after that comment on paragraph 11. This world is full of way too many douche bags, and I applaud you for putting up with him for so long.
Most people in my area are like this. You learn to have a high tolerance to bullshit or you'll lose your mind.
Godzillian wrote:So why do you talk to this person if they get you so triggered?
Why ask a question that was already answered? :eh: I thought we were friends till recently, now I'm wondering if we ever were or we are just two guys who just know each other. It's not like we don't have any common interests. Just kaiju isn't one of them.

It's easy to see a stranger as an asshole cause you're an outside looking in but it takes longer to realize someone is an asshole when you've known someone for a long time, you're inside looking out. In recent years I've started to notice my family is not as close or understanding as I remember when I was younger. I have to wonder if we ever were or it's just false memories from a child that was too young and naive to see how things really were.

I've been made fun for my hobbies so much as a kid that it's lost all of it's sting. A person you personal know telling you your hobby is stupid has more weight to their words than some stranger telling you Godzilla is gay. Now days I get more shit from shitty Godzilla fans online than some none fan douche.

Plus your question could be applied to anyone who posted in here, but that's the point of this topic, to talk about weird or stupid shit people have said to us about our hobby, get it off of our chest.

I wouldn't say everything Hollywood made or makes sucks, but yeah acting like it can do no wrong is just as dumb as saying they can't do anything right.
Dawsbfiremind wrote:My faith in the GA is rapidly dying of something similar to suffocation after reading that.
I feel like a lot of mainstream films dumbing things down for the GA because they think they are idiots like that one guy in the theater who says "I don't get it" has turned everyone into that one guy. You treat someone like idiots long enough, they will start acting like it. Filmmakers need to stop dumbing things down because grandma didn't get why the Terminator was able to reboot when one of his power cells was destroyed.

If you can get more people to like seeing movies that make them think. Not that there's anything wrong with mindless popcorn flicks mind you, I mean Godzilla vs Megalon isn't exactly high art.

Eh, generally women and girls don't get into kaiju, it's still seen as a guy thing. Minilla, Mothra and Godzilla Jr were made to help draw in female fans and it works.

But I have to wonder did she say this before or after Godzilla 2014 came out? I mean you don't need to see the movie to know Godzilla is a giant dinosaur when the commercials and tv spots show the moster.
