These are the titles that immediately spring to mind as making the short list for single-player experiences:

The Legend of Zelda
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Super Mario Bros. 2 (JPN)/The Lost Levels
Castlevania III
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

I'll go ahead and say that any of the Zeldas prior to Twilight Princess, all the old 2D Mario games, and any classic Castlevania* will always be endlessly entertaining to me though. Always fun to pick up and play, always new ways to challenge yourself, and each made with so much care in terms of design and presentation. There isn't really a bad entry in the lot; just some that are more superlative than others. Every one is a master class in some way.

*minus Simon's Quest, because man was that badly conceived

Adding Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom to my list, because I developed a nice little love-hate relationship with that game over the past week.

Like most of my favorite games, it invoked real feelings. Feelings like, "How the fuck will I ever be able to do this?" And "I did it!"

Ninja Gaiden III, Castlevania III and Super Mario Bros. 2 JPN are all monsters, and I love them.

Aaaand adding Doom 64. I've been doing a blind hard-mode run of the EX source port on PC recently, and I think it's phenomenal. Very cruel, very puzzly, with smaller levels on average than id's Doom, but with plenty of devious traps and maintaining a tendency to use enemy placement against you. Rather than using fast-paced horde combat as much (though that's still present), it tends to force combat and puzzles together, and trap you in rooms or hallways with inconvenient encounters. I think between this and Ninja Gaiden III, I just have a thing for the slightly slower, more methodical (but still hard-as-nails), weird third entries. It's going to be a slow grind to the end. Beating each level feels great. I think my one complaint with the game so far, at seven levels in, is that doing some of the levels from a pistol start already seems nightmarish. Even in hard mode, the classic Doom games tend to be mostly conscious about allowing you to gain some traction from a pistol start, give or take a few maps. Still, since the original cartridge let you load up a password or use the memory card, I'm keeping my weapons between deaths without guilt.

Anyway, not to speak ill of standard Doom, because that's all really fun too. This just immediately clicked with me in a "This is a favorite" way.

List (really selective; games I truly love)
Castlevania III (absolute favorite)
Zelda: Majora's Mask
Zelda: Wind Waker
Adventure of Link
Super Mario Bros. 2 (JPN)
Ninja Gaiden III
Doom 64

I don't know that I have an all-time favorite game, but I definitely have a group of favorites. So, in no particular order:

Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie (In my opinion, the greatest platformers of all time)
Final Fantasy VI, VII, Crisis Core, and XV
Chrono Trigger
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Halo: CE, 3, Reach, and 5
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Quake
Super Mario World
Pokémon Red, Gold, and Y

These are all games I revisit time and again. I find that I appreciate them more each time I play through. I enjoy many games, but these are definitely the ones I have to put above the rest for one reason or another. Perhaps one day when I'm a little more awake I'll go into my reasons for each of these games being among my favorites.

Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Undertale
Banjo Kazooie
Portal
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Team fortress 2

Just to name a few
I calculated the odds of this succeeding vs the odds I was doing something incredibly stupid, and I went ahead and did it anyways.
