Disable the Report function for some members

Postby Spirit Ghidorah 2010 » Mon May 02, 2011 7:56 am

It's quite obvious that some members don't know what the hell kinds of posts are breaking the rules, and are now reporting innocuous posts that are otherwise doing zero harm. I'm pretty sure the mods are getting more than slightly perturbed at having meaningless false alarms spammed into their inbox. Is there some way to disable those report privileges for some troublesome members, or perhaps punish those who abuse the Report function with perhaps a 30-day ban (per Watsy's suggestion)?

I wouldnt disable it, but I would punish those who abuse it.

Someone wants to report 30 posts a day and if more then 5 of them are BS, they get an immediate 30-day ban if theyve had a previous ban or 4 warnings.

Yeah. It sounds like too much work for so little an improvement.

I get the feeling that some people using the report button are less concerned with trying to alert the mods to problems, and more with trying to get people they don't like into trouble. Sometimes it's just people overreacting, and that's fine, but when it gets to a point where we can see a pattern then it becomes a nuisance. Futhermore, it makes it harder for me (I can't speak for anyone else) to ever take the person seriously whenever I see that they've reported something. I just see it as another attempt to get someone else into trouble.

While I don't disagree with the suggestion for punishing people who use the report button as a way to get at people they have a problem with, I honestly doubt there'd ever come a time when people are banned for spamming it. I wouldn't have a problem if that were ever to go into effect, though. Right now, I do believe warnings are given out for abusing it.

If there's a point to made in any of that - it's not to abuse the report feature. It's annoying to people (or, at least myself) to have to sort through these messages looking for an actual problem. It's going to annoy anyone who finds out that their post was reported for no good reason. And it makes it harder for anyone to take you seriously at all.

I have only ever used the report feature twice. One was on that annoying noob that said TK was nothing but dudes waving their dicks around and the other was an adbot.

I usually ignore the feature.

Basically, I've been ignoring any reports people file on the site.

If I get a message on FB or a text, then I actually bother.

I'm still shocked I haven't gotten a single warn.

Mods, mind me asking how many members send in reports day usually? Not how many reports, but how many people use it. As far as I can tell, the majority of this forum flat-out refuses to use the feature and I can only think of two people, myself included, who use it.

If I get a message on FB or a text, then I actually bother.

People actually do that? Seriously?

I ask them to because I don't take any of the reports on here seriously.

I don't see it as annoying, but I do think that a mod outright ignoring reported posts on the actual board is pretty ridiculous and helps to make the report function completely pointless.

And we all know who this thread is about anyway, so why can't someone just take care of that member? Wouldn't the countless reported posts stop?

Just disable the function for everyone and save bandwidth IMHO and promote a new active member to mod, make Stuckey an admin & finally crack down on this problem member and be done with it.

More in favor of punishing people who abuse the report feature, as it really does counteract mod efforts.

Despite what some people are saying, its impossible to have "eyes and ears" everywhere on a board this size at all times, so the report feature increases awareness.
