It worked then because it was played as a pretty broad comedy (with a certain frisson coming from the somewhat serious presentation of Godzilla, but he was still being played for less heavy impact than in his first two outings). I have doubts about a modern American audience's interest in - or a studio's willingness to put a big budget behind - a similarly campy production. And I have a hard time imagining how a "serious" version would work while being at all faithful to both characters; nor do I personally see the appeal in such a thing.
The old school movie matinee audience that turned out for things like big movie monster mash-ups just doesn't seem to exist anymore.
