Would be cool to have a female Godzilla, though.
Biollante says hi. ;)

Nah but I know what you're saying, maybe a rival Godzilla to fight who happens to be the opposite sex, maybe even make her bigger and stronger so the Godzilla we all know and love is the underdog.

Godzilla has always been strictly male for me. It would be interesting to see a female Godzilla though.

he's a dude, he's always been a dude, dude.

no really. nothing ever happened or came up to suggest to me that anything else was or could be true about his gender, so i just kinda left it at that. i also consider some of the fandom's most beloved kaiju to be female, so don't think that i'm one of those "cool monsters can only be a male" types.

Godzilla is not the birth parent in either film... his behavior was based on types of adult crocodiles and alligators, who will respond to distress calls from babies of their species whether they are the parent or not.

SON OF GODZILLA opens with Minilla's distress call jamming transmissions on a plane at sea and calling Godzilla to the surface. Godzilla then swims for days to reach Solgell Island. And in MECHAGODZILLA II, Baby Godzilla's egg is 65 million years old and is found near the fossilized skeleton of a pteranodon. The egg lights up in distress and Godzilla responds.

It's not a matter of what the fans think or prefer. Toho owns Godzilla and, as kpa thoroughly explained in this thread, they have consistently used male pronouns in reference to him for the entire six decades of his existence. Plain and simple. Seriously, where is the confusion?

I'm pretty sure that was a joke.

And yeah Id agree really TOHO has the final word but there's conflictions between different directors and actors stating the gender. TOHO trumps them but it's still interesting thinking about.

Now, what's the gender of Minya/little godzilla? Little Godzilla is male because if Godzilla JUNIOR. But not sure about Minya.

Male, but I think he could work perfectly well as a female or even a hermaphrodite too.

He was being sarcastic.
It's like they think King of the Monsters means nothing. Toho even used it in 2 films.

Toho has used male terms to describe Godzilla, therefore Godzilla is a male. Take this as example; In SOG, Godzilla saves Minya from the Kamacuras and then walks away. He returns a moment later. If Godzilla was female and it was her egg, it would be unlikey Godzilla would abandon the child after saving it. Godzilla also seems very territorial, something often seen in male animals.

I honestly don't care if he was or not. A lot of people over the years have mistakenly believed the same thing -- just look at Alex Cox's pitch to direct the TriStar GODZILLA 20+ years ago -- so it was worth addressing in a thread like this one. It's for the benefit of anyone who might be interested in the topic, not just the one person being quoted.

I always considered a Godzilla a he, early confusion caused by '98 notwithstanding. He's referred to as a "he" by characters, in promotional material, et cetera for 60+ years. At this point, this is like asking if one considers James Bond female.

The beginning of Godzilla vs Megaguirus and the beginning of Godzilla: Final Wars. Both times it's the narrator.
